Parenting Perspective
Conversations about the sensitive subject of attraction are among the most delicate, yet most essential, discussions a parent can initiate. In an age where children face constant exposure to romantic content, appearance driven standards, and emotional confusion, silence is no longer effective protection. If parents do not guide their children with conviction, social media and peers certainly will fill that void. The crucial goal is not to suppress natural curiosity, but to shape it with sincerity and spiritual dignity.
As a responsible parent, you must help your child understand that attraction itself is not sinful it is a natural feeling created by Allah Almighty as part of the human design. What matters most is how we respond to it. By teaching them honesty and modesty together, you can nurture self awareness without shame, and morality without fear.
Begin with Calm, Not Caution
When your child begins to ask thoughtful questions about attraction or relationships, resist the urge to deflect, dismiss, or show discomfort. Instead, sincerely thank them for trusting you. Say something like, ‘It is good that you are asking me about this Allah Almighty made these feelings natural, and our faith teaches us how to handle them wisely and beautifully.’
- When your child correctly senses that the topic is completely safe to discuss, they will approach you with curiosity instead of secrecy.
- That established trust becomes the reliable foundation for their long term moral maturity.
Frame Attraction as a Trust, Not a Taboo
Explain gently that attraction is an intrinsic part of Allah Almighty’s design for wholesome human connection and stable family life. You can say, ‘Allah Almighty made people feel drawn to one another so that genuine love could lead to mercy, care, and marriage not confusion, harm, or regret.’
- Help them clearly see that the feelings themselves are not wrong what matters are the boundaries that protect those feelings and their consequences.
- Just as temporary hunger does not make someone greedy, attraction does not inherently make someone sinful. The critical difference lies in how we respond to the feeling with spiritual discipline or mere indulgence.
Teach Modesty as Strength, Not Suppression
Parents should discuss the concept of modesty (haya) as a form of powerful inner strength, not a form of external weakness. Say, ‘Modesty means actively protecting what is precious and sacred, not merely hiding what is shameful or ugly.’ Teach them that lowering the gaze, choosing respectful language, and dressing with dignity are not rules of restriction, but clear signs of profound self respect.
- Show your child that modesty is a virtue that equally benefits both genders it protects hearts, builds strong trust, and preserves purity of thought.
- By linking modesty directly to their self worth, your child will learn that controlling one’s desires is not an act of denial, but an expression of true dignity.
Balance Honesty with Boundaries
Give age appropriate explanations tailored to their maturity level. For younger children, use simple truths about emotions and mutual respect. For older children, speak more directly about temptation, the pitfalls of emotional attachment outside of marriage, and the necessity of delaying intimacy until lawful marriage.
- Encourage them to ask questions freely and honestly, but also remind them that some intimate details are private and sacred, reserved only for specific contexts.
- This crucial balance honesty within modesty helps them navigate their complex emotions without unnecessary guilt or secretive behaviour.
Guide Through Emotional Intelligence
Teach your child to recognise clearly when attraction may begin to cloud sound judgement. Help them identify early emotional signals admiration, curiosity, or infatuation and respond to them with spiritual maturity. Encourage them to make dua, seek purposeful distraction through good deeds, and confidently confide in you when their feelings become confusing or overwhelming.
- Explain that emotions are essentially tests, not sins in and of themselves.
- When emotions are controlled with patience and guidance, they lead to growth; when indulged without spiritual guidance, they often cause regret.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond the scope of emotional education lies the profound divine wisdom of Islam, which simultaneously dignifies natural love whilst protecting spiritual purity. The noble Quran and the teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ guide believers to approach attraction with sincerity, respect, and unwavering self control. Islam does not seek to deny natural desire; it channels it actively toward goodness and righteousness.
Purity as a Sign of Faith
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30–31:
‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah Almighty is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not display their adornment except what is apparent thereof…’
This verse fundamentally teaches that both men and women share the vital responsibility of upholding modesty. The divine command to ‘lower the gaze‘ is not just about avoiding sinful acts but about protecting the sincere heart from unnecessary, damaging desire. Teach your child that attraction can be managed effectively through self awareness, prayer, and a purposeful focus on matters that please Allah Almighty.
- Let them know that purity begins with small, daily choices avoiding what harms the heart and actively seeking what pleases Allah Almighty.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4181, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘No one has ever been given anything better than modesty.’
This Hadith beautifully reminds us that modesty (haya) is not a restriction imposed from the outside but a divine gift a source of tremendous inner strength and peace. Help your child understand that modesty comprehensively safeguards both their personal dignity and their emotional well being. It prevents future regret and nurtures essential self control, allowing genuine love to fully blossom within the sacred boundaries of faith.
When children perceive modesty as something profoundly noble and empowering, they will approach the powerful feeling of attraction with necessary balance neither completely suppressing it nor being carelessly consumed by it. As your child matures, continue to guide them with openness and trust. Create a home environment where all questions about relationships, emotions, or temptation can be discussed without any fear of judgement. When they know that Islam acknowledges their feelings while guiding their choices, they will develop self respect and a strong reliance on Allah Almighty. Teach them that attraction becomes truly meaningful when it is rooted in divine purpose, not in fleeting impulse. Remind them that every emotion is an opportunity for sincere worship: patience is a reward, restraint is strength, and purity is a tremendous honour. In time, they will realise that Islamic ethics surrounding attraction are not intended to deny them love, but to help them experience it with clarity, sincerity, and barakah (divine blessing).
