How can I support strong bones and muscles before puberty begins?

Parenting Perspective

Before puberty, a child’s body experiences steady growth that prepares the foundation for the rapid development to come. Supporting bone and muscle strength during this stage is vital, as it shapes lifelong health, posture, and confidence. Good habits built now protect the body later. The key lies in balance, offering nourishment, movement, and rest without pressure or comparison.

Prioritise Nourishment and Diet

Start with a wholesome diet rich in natural nutrients. Include calcium sources such as milk, yoghurt, cheese, and leafy greens, alongside foods rich in vitamin D, like eggs and fish. You can tell your child, ‘These foods help your bones grow strong so you can run, play, and build easily.’ Explaining the purpose of food motivates children more than enforcing rules.

Encourage Movement and Sunlight

Encourage outdoor activity. Natural sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D, which strengthens bones. Activities such as cycling, skipping, and playing football strengthen both muscles and coordination. Focus on enjoyment rather than competition. Say, ‘Moving your body keeps it thankful for the blessings Allah Almighty gave.’ This gentle link between health and gratitude inspires consistency.

Teach Posture and Alignment

Teach correct posture early. Encourage children to sit and stand tall, carry bags evenly, and stretch after long periods of sitting. Small reminders prevent future discomfort and create awareness of how the body supports itself.

Ensure Regular Rest and Hydration

Growth occurs during sleep, and dehydration can reduce energy for play and learning. Establish a consistent bedtime routine and remind your child to drink water often. Rested bodies recover faster and grow stronger.

Model Balance and Praise Effort

Model balance by living the same habits. When children see their parents eating well, walking regularly, and valuing rest, they naturally follow. Praise effort rather than size or shape. You can say, ‘I love how active you are,’ or, ‘You are taking great care of your body.’ Such words build motivation rooted in self-respect, not appearance.

By creating a supportive environment that celebrates growth, movement, and nourishment, parents help their children develop strong bones and muscles, and an even stronger attitude of thankfulness towards the body Allah Almighty designed with such wisdom.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that caring for the body is part of fulfilling the trust (Amanah) Allah Almighty has placed upon every believer. Building strength and health from a young age is not about perfection but gratitude, honouring what Allah has given and preparing the body to serve in goodness.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 195:

‘And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction, but do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good…’

This Ayah reminds believers that preserving health is a form of goodness and responsibility. Parents can explain that eating well, sleeping properly, and moving regularly are ways of protecting Allah’s gift of life.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer, while there is good in both…’

This Hadith encourages building both physical and spiritual strength. Parents can use it to teach that maintaining health allows one to serve others better, pray with focus, and live with energy and joy.

Encourage your child to make small Duas like, ‘O Allah, keep my body strong so I can do good things.’ Such prayers connect strength to purpose. Remind them that their body is not for pride but for service, to help, to learn, and to worship.

By nurturing strength through gratitude and discipline, parents prepare children for the growth ahead with balance and faith. In learning to care for their bones and muscles, they also learn to care for their amanah, living with appreciation, responsibility, and readiness to serve Allah Almighty in every stage of life.
