Parenting Perspective
Children today are growing up in environments where faith and identity are constantly challenged. When their peers question traditional Islamic teachings about gender, it can cause confusion or even self doubt. The solution is not isolation, but empowerment; teaching your child to hold firm to truth with wisdom, compassion, and confidence. Islam’s view of gender is not outdated; it is timeless, balanced, and deeply rooted in divine wisdom. Your role as a parent is to help your child see this with clarity and calmness.
Begin by Building Emotional Safety
When your child brings up a peer’s question, respond first with patience, not panic. A calm tone builds trust. You might say, ‘It is good that you are thinking deeply. Let us explore what Islam says together.’This reassures your child that questioning is not rebellion but part of learning.
If you react with anger or fear, they may turn to friends or the internet for answers. By making your home a safe space for discussion, you become their first refuge when doubts arise.
Teach the Source of Truth
Help your child understand that in Islam, truth does not come from popularity or trends, but from revelation. Say, ‘What people believe changes with time, but what Allah Almighty teaches stays true forever.’
Give them examples: science, fashion, and social ideas all evolve, yet the Quran remains unchanged because it is divine, not human. When children realise that faith is built on unchanging truth, not opinion, they gain inner stability in a world of shifting voices.
Encourage Respectful Understanding
You must teach your child that Islam promotes respect for all people, even when beliefs differ. You might say, ‘We can listen and be kind, but kindness does not mean we must agree.’This helps them interact confidently with peers without feeling defensive or ashamed of their faith.
Encourage them to ask, ‘Does this belief bring peace, humility, and balance, or confusion and pride?’Such questions guide them to recognise that divine truth always leads to peace, while man made distortions often bring restlessness.
Reinforce Faith Through Real Role Models
Introduce them to men and women in Islamic history who stood firm in truth despite social pressure. Speak about Prophet Yusuf (Alaihis Salam), who resisted temptation and remained steadfast, and about Maryam (Radiyallahu Anha), who upheld purity and faith when her society doubted her.
These stories teach resilience and self respect; that staying true to Allah Almighty’s wisdom, even when misunderstood, is the highest form of strength. Children who connect faith to courage are less likely to feel embarrassed about following divine guidance.
Equip Them to Respond Wisely
Give your child short, clear ways to respond when challenged. For example:
- ‘In Islam, Allah Almighty created everyone with purpose and fairness.’
- ‘Men and women are equal in worth but different in roles.’
- ‘Our identity is from Allah Almighty, not from trends.’
Such concise answers help them stay calm and confident without entering confrontations. Teach them that the goal is not to win arguments, but to remain dignified and truthful. End each conversation with reassurance: ‘Do not worry about what others think. Allah Almighty knows your heart, and that is what matters most.’
Spiritual Insight
When a child’s faith is tested by the opinions of others, what steadies them is spiritual grounding. The noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that every believer must expect challenges, yet every challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger in conviction and sincerity.
Standing Firm with Knowledge and Patience
Steadfastness in faith brings inner peace and divine support, even amidst external pressure.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Fussilat (41), Verse 30:
‘Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allah Almighty,’and then remained steadfast the angels will descend upon them, [saying], ‘Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised…’‘
This verse teaches that firmness in truth brings peace and honour, even when society questions it. Explain to your child that when they stand calmly for what Allah Almighty commands, they are never alone. The angels support those who remain steadfast in faith and kindness. Encourage them to draw strength from prayer, dhikr, and companionship with sincere friends who share their values. A heart connected to Allah Almighty cannot be shaken by peer pressure.
True Honour Belongs to Obedience
The wisdom of prioritizing divine approval over human praise is key to spiritual independence and genuine confidence.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2414, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah Almighty at the risk of displeasing people, Allah Almighty will suffice him against the people; and whoever seeks to please people at the risk of displeasing Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty will leave him to the people.‘
This Hadith reveals the essence of courage. Teach your child that true empowerment is not in following every new idea but in pleasing Allah Almighty, even when it is unpopular. The approval of people fades, but the pleasure of Allah Almighty endures forever. When children learn this, they develop spiritual independence; a strength that allows them to respect others without surrendering their beliefs.
Your calm explanations, sincere listening, and consistent reminders will show them that Islam’s teachings are not fragile; they are timeless and compassionate. Teach them to speak with humility, listen with patience, and live with conviction. Faith becomes strongest not when it is untested, but when it is tested and remains intact.
