How can I show my son that modesty applies to both men and women?

Parenting Perspective

Many boys regrettably grow up hearing discussions about modesty almost exclusively in the context of girls, while rarely being taught that it is an equally vital, non negotiable requirement for them. Yet, in Islam, modesty (haya’) is rightly considered the crown of both genders, a virtuous quality that actively reflects inner dignity, self respect, and profound reverence for Allah Almighty. Teaching your son clearly that modesty applies just as much to him as it does to his sisters will fundamentally shape him into a man of necessary humility, graceful restraint, and quiet composure.

Beginning with the Essence of Modesty

Start by explaining sincerely that modesty is not simply a matter of clothing or external appearance; it is essentially about one’s entire behaviour, speech, and inner intention. Tell your son, ‘Modesty means constantly remembering that Allah Almighty is always watching us. When we act, speak, or even think, we consciously try to do so in a way that truly pleases Him.’

Help him to clearly see that modesty organically flows from genuine self awareness. When a person correctly values their soul, they naturally treat their body and their words with immense care. Boys who learn this truth early mature into men who effortlessly command respect through quiet dignity, never through superficial display or attention seeking.

Modelling Equal Standards

Children naturally learn essential fairness from what they consistently see, not just from what they hear preached. If you speak about the necessity of modesty only in the context of girls, boys may mistakenly assume it does not truly concern them. Instead, intentionally use balanced language. Tell him, ‘Allah Almighty asks both men and women to diligently lower their gaze and to speak with respect and clarity. Modesty is a protective shield for everyone.’

Set transparent and consistent expectations. Just as you thoughtfully guide your daughters about appropriate dress and respectable manner, gently remind your son to choose clothing that consciously reflects humility, to actively avoid boastful or aggressive speech, and to interact with everyone respectfully. When modesty is taught and expected equally, it correctly becomes a deeply shared virtue rather than a restrictive gender rule.

Linking Modesty with Strength and Honour

Explain emphatically that modesty is not a weakness; it is a profound internal strength. You might say, ‘It takes real courage and immense discipline to actively behave with dignity when others around you are seeking attention. Modesty makes a man noble because it shows he controls himself entirely for Allah Almighty.’

Share practical examples from the life of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his noble companions, who constantly embodied modesty even when they held positions of power. Tell him how holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always lowered his gaze, consistently spoke gently, and treated all people with inherent respect. When your son realises that sincere modesty was the hallmark of the bravest and strongest men in Islam, he will come to see it as a mark of honour, never a restriction.

Encouraging Reflection and Responsibility

When your son sincerely asks why modesty truly matters, use both reason and deep empathy in your explanation. Explain, ‘Modesty consciously protects hearts. It keeps all relationships pure and wholesome, it prevents arrogance from taking root, and it constantly reminds us that our true worth comes from noble character, not external appearance.’

Encourage him to pause and reflect before posting anything online, before choosing new friends, or before speaking in public. Say, ‘Always ask yourself: would this particular action please Allah Almighty? Would this action show appropriate respect for myself and for others?‘ These reflective questions actively train his conscience, which is the true, internal guardian of modesty.

End your conversation with love and clarity: ‘Modesty makes you truly beautiful in Allah Almighty’s sight, not because it seeks to hide you, but because it actively refines and purifies you.’

Spiritual Insight

Beyond mere social conduct and specific dress codes, modesty is a direct and powerful reflection of faith itself. The noble Quran and the Sunnah clearly reveal that haya’ is not arbitrarily limited by gender; it is a foundational quality that profoundly beautifies every believer’s soul.

A Shared Command for Both Genders

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30 to 31:

‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah Almighty is acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts…‘

This pivotal passage makes it absolutely clear that Allah Almighty commands modesty for both men and women equally. The very first instruction is directly addressed to men, serving as a powerful reminder that self restraint, purity of intention, and guarded conduct are all indispensable masculine virtues. Explain clearly to your son that the gaze, the tongue, and the heart are all essential spiritual places where modesty must constantly reside and thrive.

When he fully understands that Allah Almighty honours men who proactively protect their eyes, their speech, and their inner intentions, he learns that modesty is not a limitation but a genuine liberation: it is freedom from the enslavement of temptation, destructive pride, and inevitable regret.

Modesty as a Branch of Faith

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 35, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Faith has over seventy branches, and modesty is a branch of faith.‘

This profound Hadith clearly shows that the virtue of modesty is inseparable from true belief. Teach your son that every single act of modesty he performs, whether it is lowering his gaze, consciously choosing decent and respectful words, or actively avoiding boastfulness, actively strengthens his faith. Modesty is not just external or visible behaviour; it is a true reflection of a heart that sincerely reveres Allah Almighty above all else.

When he truly realises that modesty consistently nurtures both his inherent dignity and his spiritual faith, he will embrace it willingly and sincerely, never reluctantly or resentfully.

When boys fully grasp that modesty applies to them just as much as it does to girls, they naturally begin to live with genuine integrity rather than adopting destructive double standards. They learn to sincerely value people for their unshakeable faith and noble character, not merely for their fleeting appearance or social popularity.

Through your consistent, loving example and compassionate teaching, your son will grow to see modesty as a vital act of worship, one that spiritually beautifies him before Allah Almighty, softens his heart towards others, and permanently elevates his honour.

As he matures, he will learn that modesty is fundamentally not about hiding his true self but about diligently guarding his soul; it becomes a powerful spiritual shield that protects his heart from the arrogance of the ego and his eyes from the temptation of sin. Such a man does not anxiously seek fleeting attention; he sincerely seeks the ultimate pleasure of Allah Almighty, walking with quiet internal strength, deep dignity, and spiritual light.
