Parenting Perspective
When your child notices you choosing products that cost more because they are ethical, fair, or halal, they might ask, ‘Why spend extra when the cheaper one looks the same?’ To them, cost is simple and visible, while moral value can feel abstract. This question is a precious opportunity to teach them the true meaning of barakah: the unseen blessing that comes from doing what pleases Allah Almighty.
Explain What Barakah Truly Means
Start with simple warmth. You can say, ‘Barakah means Allah makes something small last longer, feel fuller, or bring more happiness.’ Offer relatable examples: ‘Sometimes a meal looks small but everyone eats and feels satisfied. That is barakah. Or when something we buy lasts a long time without breaking, that is also barakah.’
Then, make the connection to ethics: ‘When we make honest and kind choices, even if they cost more, Allah puts barakah in what we buy. It becomes more valuable because it is filled with blessing.’ Linking barakah to daily experiences helps your child grasp that goodness multiplies when guided by sincerity.
Show the Link Between Ethics and Peace
Children often understand the world through emotion. When they see your contentment after choosing an ethical product, they learn that peace follows integrity. You can say, ‘It feels good to buy what is right, does it not? We may spend a bit more, but it makes our heart light because it pleases Allah.’
Help them notice how ethical choices bring calmness, trust, and satisfaction, which are signs of barakah beyond money. They will begin to understand that blessings often appear not in things, but in feelings.
Use Comparisons That Make the Lesson Real
If your child insists on something cheaper, gently compare. Say, ‘This one costs less, but it may not last long, and the people who made it might have been treated unfairly. The other one costs more, but it helps workers live better and is made with care.’ Then ask, ‘Which do you think will make Allah happier with our choice?’
Children value purpose when they feel included in the decision. When they choose ethically with you, praise them sincerely: ‘You picked kindness, and that brings barakah to both our hearts.’
Model Ethical Spending and Gratitude
Children learn moral lessons more through observation than instruction. Let them see you choosing fairness with a smile, not hesitation. Say aloud, ‘We are spending a bit more because this company is honest, and honesty brings blessing.’
Show gratitude every time you make such a choice: ‘Alhamdulillah, we are spending with peace of mind.’ The consistency of your words and your calm contentment will teach your child that ethical spending does not reduce wealth; it multiplies blessing.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that true prosperity comes not from what is abundant, but from what is pure. Every decision made with honesty and compassion carries barakah, an invisible blessing that fills one’s life with serenity and increase. Teaching your child this truth helps them see that every purchase, however small, can be an act of worship when guided by righteousness.
Righteous Spending Invites Divine Blessing
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 261:
‘The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] that grows seven ears; in every ear are a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies for whom He wills, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing…’
This verse powerfully illustrates that whatever is given or spent with sincerity multiplies through divine will. You can tell your child, ‘When we spend our money rightly, even a little becomes a lot because Allah blesses it.’ By connecting ethical spending to this verse, you show that barakah is not luck; it is Allah’s reward for goodness.
Purity and Fairness in Earnings
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 560, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah is pure and accepts only what is pure.’
You can explain to your child, ‘When we buy or earn in the right way, our choices stay pure, and Allah accepts them. But if something comes from unfairness, it loses blessing.’ This Hadith helps them understand that integrity and cleanliness in what we buy or eat are forms of worship. Spending ethically keeps the heart light and the home full of blessing, even if the price seems higher.
When your child begins to see how ethical decisions bring barakah, they will start to measure wealth by peace, not possessions. They will realise that a costly but honest choice brings more happiness than a cheap but unjust one.
Over time, they will notice that barakah transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary ones: their toys last longer, their meals feel richer, and their hearts stay content. They will understand that when we choose what pleases Allah Almighty, He fills our homes and lives with His unseen generosity.
Through your example and sincerity, your child will learn that ethical living is not about giving up comfort, but gaining tranquillity; a richness that grows quietly within, nourished by the blessing of barakah.
