Parenting Perspective
The key here is to foster a sense of safety and empowerment. Children often feel powerless when someone disregards their personal boundaries, which can create anxiety and confusion. Helping them feel secure while teaching them effective strategies to assert their limits is essential for their emotional and physical wellbeing.
Validate Their Feelings and Instincts
Start by naming their feelings and validating their experience. A simple script can be very effective: ‘I understand you feel uncomfortable when someone does not respect your space. Your feelings are important and deserve to be heard’. This acknowledgement reassures your child that their instincts are trustworthy and that feeling uneasy is a natural signal that boundaries are being crossed. Children internalise confidence when they understand that their emotions are meaningful indicators of safety.
Teach and Practise Clear, Assertive Phrases
Teach simple, clear phrases that your child can use to assert their limits. Examples include, ‘Please stop, I do not like that’, or ‘I need some space right now’. Practising these statements aloud in calm, role-play scenarios allows them to rehearse their responses, which reduces hesitation when real situations occur. This repetition makes the response feel natural rather than forced under stress. You can say, ‘Let us try this together and see how strong your voice can be’.
Create a Practical Safety Plan
Reinforce the idea that they always have the right to remove themselves from an unsafe interaction. Practical actions, like stepping back, moving to a safe area, or immediately seeking a trusted adult, give them clear steps to regain control. Practising these steps together at home establishes familiarity and reduces panic. You might say: ‘If anyone makes you uncomfortable, come and find me or another grown-up you trust right away’. This concrete strategy creates a sense of preparedness, helping them feel capable rather than fearful.
Model Respectful Boundaries at Home
Modelling boundaries at home is one of the most powerful ways to teach this concept. When parents and caregivers consistently respect one another’s personal limits, including those of siblings, the child sees a live demonstration of the principles being taught. Praise your child when they assert their boundaries in daily life, linking the action to courage and self-respect.
Spiritual Insight
Islam emphasises the protection of oneself and others and encourages proactive steps to prevent harm. Teaching children to assert their boundaries responsibly is aligned with the principles of justice and care for one’s wellbeing. A child who understands their right to personal safety is learning to honour the trust that Allah Almighty has placed in them.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 195:
‘And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction…’
This verse reminds us that taking action to safeguard ourselves is not only practical but spiritually significant. Helping a child recognise personal limits and assert themselves is a direct application of this teaching. It encourages them to value the life and protection that Allah Almighty has granted.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3982, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘A believer is not stung twice from the same hole.’
This hadith emphasises the importance of responding wisely to situations that threaten safety. When children learn to identify boundary violations, assert themselves, and seek help promptly, they internalise a principle of proactive protection that is both morally and spiritually sound. This guidance teaches that recognising warning signs and acting accordingly is a form of prudence, not fear.
By validating feelings, practising assertive responses, and creating concrete safety plans, you can help your child navigate interactions with confidence. Combining these practical steps with spiritual guidance instils moral clarity and emotional resilience, ensuring they understand that protecting themselves is not only wise but also valued by Allah Almighty.
