Parenting Perspective
As children grow and begin to think seriously about relationships or marriage, one of the most vital qualities they must develop is honest intention. In a culture that often values impression over integrity, helping your child approach such discussions truthfully (without fear or pretence) is an act of deep parental care. Honesty in intention protects not just reputation, but hearts. It turns emotional interaction into spiritual sincerity and ensures that their choices remain anchored in faith, not impulse.
Begin by Teaching the Meaning of Intention
Explain that intention (niyyah) is the purpose behind every word and action. You can say, ‘Allah Almighty sees not just what we say, but why we say it.’ Teach your child that honest intention means being truthful with oneself first; knowing whether one’s motives are faith driven or self serving. This awareness makes every conversation about relationships or marriage a moment of self accountability, not self promotion.
Create an Environment of Safe Honesty
Children cannot speak honestly if they fear judgment or anger. Let them know they can share their thoughts openly, even if their emotions are confusing or premature. If they mention liking someone, respond calmly rather than critically. You might say, ‘Thank you for trusting me. Let us talk about what you are feeling and what Allah Almighty would want from you in this situation.’ This reassures them that truth is safe in your presence and that honesty brings guidance, not punishment.
Teach That Sincerity Is Strength, Not Naivety
Many young people believe honesty makes them vulnerable or foolish. Explain that in Islam, sincerity is a form of courage; the strength to align one’s words with truth even when others hide behind convenience. You can say, ‘It takes real strength to speak truthfully when your heart feels uncertain.’ Teach them that Allah Almighty rewards sincerity, even when outcomes are difficult. Deceptive intentions may impress people for a moment, but sincerity earns divine peace.
Guide Them to Speak with Clarity and Respect
Prepare your child to communicate intentions gracefully if they ever discuss marriage or interest with a potential partner or with elders. Teach phrases that reflect both honesty and humility, such as:
- ‘I would like to express my interest sincerely and respectfully.’
- ‘My intention is to consider this seriously with the guidance of my family and through prayer.’
- ‘I want to be honest about my hopes while also understanding what is right in Allah Almighty’s eyes.’
These words embody transparency without emotional excess. Clarity protects all parties from misunderstanding and builds trust from the outset.
Connect Honesty with Emotional Responsibility
Explain that being truthful about intentions also means being mindful of another person’s feelings. Remind your child that expressing interest lightly, without readiness or purpose, can harm others. Say, ‘If your words might open someone’s heart, they must also be backed by sincerity and responsibility.’ This teaches them that honesty is not only in speech but in action; a reflection of respect and accountability.
Spiritual Insight
The noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasise that Allah Almighty values sincerity above outward form. When intentions are pure, actions gain worth; when they are corrupted, even beauty loses meaning. Teaching your child this divine truth shapes their entire moral framework; not just for marriage, but for every relationship and decision in life.
Sincerity as the Foundation of All Deeds
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Bayyinah (98), Verse 5:
‘And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion…‘
This verse affirms that sincerity (ikhlas) is the essence of all worship. Sharing this with your child teaches that truthfulness is not a mere moral choice; it is an act of devotion. Whether they are speaking about their goals, their emotions, or their hopes for marriage, doing so sincerely transforms a conversation into worship. When their heart’s purpose is pure, Allah Almighty blesses their path with clarity and ease.
Honesty as Protection from Deception
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6094, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire.‘
This Hadith shows that honesty is not only a moral command but a journey of character. Each truthful word trains the soul toward goodness. Teach your child that discussing intentions with honesty is not just about one conversation; it is about shaping who they become. When they make truth a habit, their decisions become lighter, their conscience calmer, and their relationships more blessed.
Preparing your child to discuss intentions honestly is about nurturing both courage and humility. Encourage them to pray before such conversations, asking Allah Almighty for sincerity and calm. Remind them that honesty, when guided by respect and faith, never diminishes dignity; it elevates it.
Over time, they will understand that being truthful about their intentions is not only about honouring others, but about honouring Allah Almighty, who knows every whisper of the heart. They will realise that sincerity attracts what is pure, and deception attracts only confusion.
