How can I prepare my child to handle new feelings towards the opposite gender respectfully?

Parenting Perspective

As children enter adolescence, they will naturally begin to experience attraction and curiosity toward the opposite gender. These emotions are entirely normal and an expected part of growing up, but they can also be confusing or emotionally overwhelming. Some children may feel unnecessary guilt for having these feelings, while others might act impulsively because they lack the necessary understanding of how to properly manage them. Your task as a parent is not to suppress these natural emotions but to help your child recognise and respect them within the wise boundaries established by Allah Almighty.

Beginning with Calm Openness

You must first create a domestic atmosphere where your child feels safe and encouraged to speak honestly and openly. If they mention liking someone or feeling curious, respond with calm interest instead of reacting with shock, immediate judgment, or disapproval. Say, ‘It is completely normal to feel that way. What truly matters is how you choose to handle these powerful feelings.’ This approach normalises their emotions, which is essential for building trust and maintaining open communication.

Explaining That Feelings are Not Sins

Help your child to clearly understand that Islam does not condemn natural, God-given emotions; it only prohibits actions that actively cross limits. Say, ‘Having these feelings is part of how Allah Almighty designed us, but controlling them is an act of worship. It is not wrong to like someone, but we show respect by keeping those feelings private and pure.’ This profound teaching effectively replaces any unwarranted guilt with a sense of personal responsibility and self-management

Teaching the Value of Self-Control

Teach your child that emotions are like waves they naturally rise and fall, and they can be guided with wisdom. Say, ‘The stronger you become on the inside, the easier it is to direct your feelings with wisdom and discipline. Controlling emotions does not make you weak; it makes you strong and mature.’ Encourage healthy, productive ways for them to channel their strong emotions, such as engaging in sports, pursuing creativity, or focusing on academic learning.

  • Define respect in mixed interactions: Discuss how to maintain dignity and respect when interacting with the opposite gender.
  • Say, ‘You can and should be kind and respectful without ever being overly personal. Speak politely, consciously avoid private conversations, and always treat others the way you want to be treated with genuine honour and dignity.’ This helps them understand that respect is a balance, not simply avoidance.

Linking Purity to Self-Worth

Explain that protecting one’s heart and emotional space is a core act of self-respect. Say, ‘When you keep your powerful emotions within the Islamic limits, you are demonstrating that you truly value yourself. You are showing that your feelings are precious and therefore deserve to be shared only in the right way, at the right time, with the right person.’ This approach gives the concept of modesty a deep emotional meaning rather than presenting it as merely a moral or legalistic instruction.

Modelling Calm Guidance

Children learn how to appropriately handle their emotions by observing how you manage affection, privacy, and boundaries in your own life. You should model a healthy, faith-based approach, showing clearly that love, respect, and faith can beautifully coexist. Let your actions and words consistently teach them that discipline and affection are not opposing forces but partners in achieving true maturity.

Spiritual Insight

Islam acknowledges the natural strength of human emotions but teaches believers to direct them with purity and purpose. Attraction is a powerful, natural instinct, but exercising self-control transforms it into spiritual strength. When children learn that managing their feelings respectfully is an act of faith, they begin to see maturity itself as a form of worship.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30–31:

‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof…’

These verses show that Islam honours both men and women by giving them equal responsibility for actively protecting their purity. You can explain it to your child like this: ‘Allah Almighty knows exactly how strong our emotions can be, so He guides us to manage them wisely. Lowering your gaze and controlling your words do not limit your feelings they protect your inner peace and dignity.’

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6804, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Whoever guarantees me what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I will guarantee him Paradise.’

This Hadith powerfully teaches that controlling one’s speech and desires is a clear path to spiritual success. You can tell your child, ‘When you guard your tongue and your strong feelings, you are protecting both your heart and your future. Allah Almighty rewards every single act of restraint with immense honour and profound peace.’

When children fully grasp that attraction is natural but discipline is divine, they learn to treat others with dignity and themselves with respect. Through your patience, honesty, and consistent example, your child will come to realise that managing their powerful emotions wisely is not about fear it is about faith, inner strength, and a love that grows beautifully under the light of Allah Almighty’s guidance.
