Parenting Perspective
Gentle, Calm, and Playful Practice
For a child who is sensitive to sounds, touch, or busy environments, learning a language can feel overwhelming if it is not handled gently. It is best to keep activities calm and short, so your child does not feel overloaded. Choose quiet times in the day when your child is more settled to practice words or stories. Use visual aids like picture cards, books with clear images, or toys that your child already loves, as these can make new words feel familiar and safe.
If certain sounds or words upset your child, do not force them to repeat them; instead, try singing gentle songs or rhymes at their own pace. You can turn language practice into play by naming objects while building with blocks or cooking together. If your child struggles with sitting still, using movement and acting out words with simple hand signs can make it easier for them to remember. Praise every small effort warmly. Be flexible: some days will go well, and others will not, and that is okay. Your calm, fun approach teaches your child that learning words can feel safe, joyful, and part of ordinary moments.
Spiritual Insight
Part of Allah’s Perfect Wisdom
Islam reminds us that each child’s unique nature is part of Allah Almighty’s perfect wisdom. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Shura (42), Verse 49:
‘For Allah (Almighty) is the sovereignty of the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; He has created what He desires….’
This Ayah can comfort you when you feel unsure about your child’s different needs. It shows that your gentle, patient approach is exactly what your child needs, not harshness or comparison.
Make it Easy
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always matched his words and tone to the listener’s needs, never overwhelming anyone. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
Keeping language learning playful and calm follows this, Sunnah. Make Dua that Allah Almighty blesses your child with comfort and ease in their words and gives you the patience to meet them where they are. Trust that every small effort, a word, a sign, a smile, is part of your child’s learning and will grow, step by step, with Allah Almighty’s mercy.
