How can I incorporate new words into everyday chores and outings?

Parenting Perspective

Weaving Words into Ordinary Moments

One of the best ways to expand your child’s vocabulary is by weaving new words into the ordinary moments you share. Children remember words best when they hear them in context—while seeing, touching, or doing something meaningful.

During chores, you can describe what you are doing: ‘I am sweeping the floor to make it clean,’ or ‘Let us fold the blue towel.’ Give your child small tasks and name each step as you go. In the kitchen, your child can stir, pour, and pass ingredients while you narrate each step: ‘This is the flour,’ ‘Now, pour the milk,’ and ‘Mix it slowly.’ Tidying toys together is another chance to name shapes, colours, and categories.

When you are out and about, make outings feel like mini language adventures. Point out signs, shop items, or details in nature: ‘Look at that tall tree,’ ‘Can you see the big lorry?’, or ‘The clouds are grey today.’ Ask gentle questions to encourage them to talk back: ‘What colour is the bus?’, ‘Shall we count the apples?’.

These small, consistent moments help words to stick in your child’s mind because they see a real purpose for them. Over time, chores and errands become rich opportunities for connection and learning, with no special lessons needed.

Spiritual Insight

Signs in the World Around Us

Islam teaches us that learning and reflection are not limited to books or classrooms; they happen in our daily actions when we perform them with awareness. The noble Quran invites us to look at the signs in the world around us as a means of strengthening our understanding and gratitude. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 164:

‘Indeed, in the creation of the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; and the alternation in the night and day… these are the Signs (of the infinite truth) for those nations that wish to understand (through logic and reason).’

Everyday life, from folding clothes to walking down a street, is full of these signs when you pause to notice them and talk about them with your child.

A Blessed Path

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

‘Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make easy for him a path to Paradise.’

Even simple words taught through chores and outings are part of that blessed path. By speaking with care and presence, you show your child that language is more than just a skill; it is a bridge that connects their heart to the world and to their Creator. Use these moments to sprinkle in Islamic words too, such as saying ‘Bismillah’ before starting a task and ‘Alhamdulillah’ when noticing a blessing. These small, repeated phrases tie daily learning to the remembrance of Allah Almighty.
