How can I identify schools that prioritise teacher wellbeing and training?

Parenting Perspective

A school’s attitude toward teacher wellbeing and professional development directly and profoundly affects the overall quality of your child’s education. Teachers who consistently feel valued, strongly supported, and spiritually inspired are naturally more patient, highly creative, and emotionally present in their classrooms. Conversely, exhausted or significantly undervalued teachers can unintentionally carry their stress into their daily interactions with the children. To ensure your child learns within a healthy, positive environment, you must look for schools that actively care for their educators as whole people: emotionally, professionally, and spiritually.

Observe How the School Speaks About Its Teachers

When you visit or carefully research potential schools, pay close attention to the specific language used on their websites or in direct conversations with the leadership. Do the leaders speak about their teachers with genuine respect and heartfelt gratitude, or do they refer to them only as mere deliverers of academic results? Schools that truly prioritise wellbeing describe their teachers as valuable partners in growth and consistently emphasise the importance of ongoing training, collaborative teamwork, and dedicated professional development. When teachers feel deeply honoured, their teaching style naturally reflects sincerity and balance.

Ask About Professional Development and Reflection

The strongest, most effective schools diligently invest in teacher learning as much as they invest in student learning. Ask highly specific questions such as: ‘How often do your teachers receive structured professional development?’ or ‘What key topics are regularly covered in your staff training sessions?’ Schools that genuinely value high quality education will willingly mention mentoring programmes, curriculum refinement workshops, and crucial spiritual training sessions. This clearly demonstrates that they view continuous growth in teaching as a continuous process, not simply a one time initial qualification.

Look for Signs of Emotional and Workload Support

Genuine teacher wellbeing extends far beyond attending occasional workshops. Ask about specific, practical support mechanisms, such as effective systems for reduced administrative burdens, robust mentorship programmes, or accessible mental health resources. Notice whether the school actively encourages reasonable work hours, provides sufficient time for daily prayer, and supports a healthy family life balance. When teachers feel truly emotionally safe and practically supported, they inevitably convey that sense of peace and stability directly to their students.

Speak to Teachers Directly

If the opportunity arises, make a concerted effort to speak with teachers during open days or parent visits. Are they visibly relaxed, genuinely engaged, and consistently positive when they describe their important work? Do they speak warmly and respectfully about the school’s leadership? High staff turnover, visible fatigue, or guarded, hesitant responses often strongly indicate poor staff care. Teachers who truly feel valued consistently radiate a quiet joy their deep love for the act of teaching is unmistakable.

Notice Stability and Continuity

Schools that successfully retain their dedicated teachers for several years running typically demonstrate that they highly value staff wellbeing and consciously invest in professional growth. Ask clearly, ‘How long have the majority of your teachers been working here?’ or ‘What methods do you use to effectively help new teachers settle in and thrive?’ Stability reflects a profoundly healthy, respectful culture where educators feel emotionally safe to both stay and genuinely flourish.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, the profound dignity of a teacher is considered sacred. The noble Quran and the Sunnah both prominently highlight that those who transmit essential knowledge are among the most highly honoured individuals in the eyes of Allah Almighty. Supporting their professional wellbeing and spiritual growth is therefore a core moral responsibility, not merely an optional policy decision.

The Honour of Those Who Carry Knowledge

Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Faatir (35), Verses 28:

‘And amongst mankind are the living creatures and the cattle, everything (in creation) is distinguished, (it is imbued with) with various shades and colours; similarly, without any doubt, the fear of Allah (Almighty) from His servants is (as at its highest form) with the scholars; indeed, Allah (Almighty) it is the Most Cherished and the Most Forgiving.’

This powerful verse reminds us that true knowledge must naturally cultivate genuine humility and deep reverence. Teachers who are properly cared for are much better equipped to truly embody that essential humility and sincere faith. Schools that conscientiously invest in their educators’ wellbeing are actively honouring this divine relationship between knowledge and profound inner peace.

Holy Prophet’s ﷺ Compassion Toward Those Who Teach

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 223, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The scholars are the heirs of the Prophets.‘

This Hadith clearly underscores the sacred trust that is carried by all sincere teachers and scholars. To truly honour their elevated role, they must be consistently treated with deep respect, adequately supported in their essential needs, and guided with genuine kindness. A school that consciously nurtures its teachers’ wellbeing faithfully mirrors the mercy of holy Prophet ﷺ actively valuing the hearts that spread knowledge as much as the knowledge itself.

Identifying schools that truly prioritise teacher wellbeing and sustained training means actively looking for more than just strong academic results; it means seeking a vibrant, pervasive culture of rahmah (mercy). In such institutions, teachers are not relentlessly driven by debilitating pressure but are instead motivated by a true, sincere purpose. They are continually renewed by moments of sincere prayer, collaborative effort, and sustained, continual learning.

When your child is fortunate enough to learn under the guidance of educators who are both emotionally cared for and spiritually grounded, they encounter faith as compassion, not as rigidity. The inner serenity of a secure teacher naturally becomes the serenity of the classroom. And through that spiritual calm, children experience precisely what true Islamic education is meant to be learning delivered with light, mercy, and perfect balance, just as it was taught by holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself.
