How can I help my child admit when they break screen rules?

Parenting Perspective

Create an Environment of Trust

Helping your child to admit when they break screen rules involves creating an environment of trust and open communication, where they feel safe to be honest without a fear of punishment. You can start by reinforcing the idea that everyone makes mistakes and that admitting them is the first step towards making things right. You might say, ‘It is okay to make mistakes, but it is important to own up to them. When we admit what happened, we can work together to make sure it does not happen again.’

Honesty is a Sign of Maturity

Make it clear that admitting mistakes is not a sign of weakness but a sign of maturity and responsibility. ‘When you admit that you broke the screen rules, you are showing that you can take responsibility for your actions. That is a very important part of growing up.’

Praise Honesty and Plan Ahead

It is important to praise your child when they admit to breaking the rules, even if it was difficult for them to do so. This helps to reinforce the idea that honesty is always the best path. ‘I am proud of you for being honest about breaking the rules. It shows that you are willing to take responsibility, and now we can work together to improve.’ Finally, you can work with your child to create a plan for managing their screen time better in the future.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, admitting our mistakes and seeking forgiveness is a sign of humility and sincerity. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Aalai Imran (3), Verse 135:

‘And when those people who have committed immoral actions, or wronged themselves; (they should) remember Allah (Almighty), and then ask for forgiveness for their sins; and who… can forgive their sins except Allah (Almighty)’

This verse teaches us that acknowledging our mistakes and seeking forgiveness is an important part of our personal growth and righteousness.

The holy Prophet Muhammad  also emphasised the value of admitting our mistakes and of seeking to improve. It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 3252, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  stated:

‘Speak the truth, even if it is bitter.’

This Hadith teaches us that honesty, especially in admitting our wrongs, is vital for our spiritual development. By helping your child to admit when they break screen rules, you are guiding them to align with these Islamic values of humility, honesty, and accountability.
