Parenting Perspective
Every single child possesses a unique blend of strengths, challenges, and learning speeds, a natural fact which often makes it quite tricky for parents to effectively balance their expectations. It is entirely common for parents to experience a degree of conflict when one child clearly excels while another may struggle significantly with the same particular task or skill. However, fundamentally understanding that children develop at widely different paces is the key to nurturing a consistently positive and supportive home environment where each child feels authentically valued for their consistent efforts, regardless of their current abilities. The enduring challenge lies in fostering an atmosphere that encourages meaningful personal growth while simultaneously maintaining fair, sustainable expectations for all children.
Focus on Individual Progress, Not Comparison
Instead of mistakenly comparing one child’s performance to that of another, you must consciously shift the focus to each child’s individual progress. For instance, offer sincere praise for their efforts based on their personal starting point and how far they have successfully advanced. You might choose to say:
‘I am genuinely proud of how diligently you have improved in this area! Please keep up that impressive work.’
This deliberate approach places the primary emphasis on personal growth and focused effort rather than measuring them against the achievements of their siblings or peers. By specifically acknowledging their progress individually, you effectively avoid creating unnecessary, damaging competition and ensure that each child feels deeply valued for their unique developmental journey.
Set Goals Tailored to Each Child’s Abilities
It is crucial to recognise that each child possesses distinctly different capabilities; therefore, you must set realistic, achievable goals for each one, carefully based on their specific abilities. This practice allows you to maintain truly fair expectations without the risk of overwhelming them. Consider the following examples:
- For a child who is genuinely struggling with a school subject, you could set the expectation: ‘Your goal this week is to improve one small thing, such as reliably completing your homework on time or intentionally reviewing your notes for ten minutes each day.’
- For a child who is excelling, you might suggest: ‘Let us collaborate to make this topic even more stimulating and interesting for you. What would you personally like to explore further within this subject area?’
This ensures that the goals are precisely tailored to their individual capacity while still encouraging consistent, measurable improvement.
Encourage Self Reflection and Personal Responsibility
Help your children systematically develop the necessary ability to thoughtfully reflect on their own personal progress. Teach them to ask constructive questions of themselves, such as:
- ‘What specific thing went well for me today? What is one area where I could realistically improve?’
- ‘What is one concrete thing I can commit to doing tomorrow to get me closer to achieving my goal?’
This practice encourages them to assume full ownership of their development and simultaneously builds crucial emotional intelligence. It also actively fosters a growth mindset, which sustains their persistence even when tasks initially seem difficult or discouraging. When children learn to focus intently on their personal growth rather than external comparison, they are far less likely to feel discouraged by the existence of uneven abilities.
Spiritual Insight
In the Islamic worldview, every child is viewed as a unique individual, endowed with distinct talents and specific abilities, and the profound responsibility for nurturing them lies directly with their parents. Allah Almighty, in His perfect wisdom, created each person with a unique distribution of strengths and weaknesses, and He never burdens any soul beyond its true capacity. When we consciously choose to balance our parental expectations with profound compassion and individual understanding, we are actively aligning ourselves with the core Islamic values of fairness (‘adl) and kindness (ihsan), recognising that every single child is on their own unique journey of spiritual and developmental growth.
The Concept of Individual Responsibility in the Eyes of Allah Almighty
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:
‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…’
This powerful Ayat beautifully illustrates the Divine truth that Allah Almighty fully understands our individual, personal capacities and does not expect us to achieve or be more than what we can genuinely handle. As parents, this serves as a potent reminder to set expectations that are directly based on what is realistic for each child, taking into full account their inherent abilities, developing strengths, and existing weaknesses. We are spiritually encouraged to be consistently patient and compassionate, fully understanding that every child’s journey is truly unique, and that Allah Almighty has purposefully equipped each child with their own potential. By consciously setting balanced, attainable expectations, we actively honour this divine wisdom and gently guide our children towards meaningful personal growth and eventual fulfillment.
The Prophet ﷺ’s Approach to Teaching and Encouragement
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2545, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Do not ask for more than what you are able to bear, and do not overburden anyone, and do not judge others by what you cannot see in them.’
This highly instructive Hadith powerfully underscores the vital importance of understanding, showing kindness, and offering unwavering support during another person’s struggles. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s guidance teaches us to consistently exhibit kindness and patience, not only in our external dealings with others but also in how we thoughtfully view and nurture our own children. When we sincerely acknowledge the individual strengths and developmental weaknesses of our children, we gain the ability to guide them with sincere empathy, setting expectations that are both fair and entirely reasonable, which ultimately encourages their confident growth without ever pushing them forcefully beyond their actual capacity.
Balancing parental expectations while compassionately handling uneven ability is essentially about cultivating a harmonious home environment characterised by consistent support, deep understanding, and a focus on personal, sustained growth. By meticulously focusing on each child’s unique and individual progress and carefully tailoring goals to align with their specific abilities, you create a supportive space where they are entirely free to flourish at their own authentic pace. This approach, which is firmly grounded in core Islamic teachings, serves as a continuous reminder that Allah Almighty’s expectations are always perfectly aligned with our individual capacities, and our primary role as parents is to guide our children with unwavering fairness, deep compassion, and spiritual wisdom. Through this gentle, balanced approach, you help your children grow into self assured, resilient individuals who confidently embrace both their evident strengths and their areas for further growth with grace and quiet perseverance.
