How can I handle one child needing a laptop for exams while others want one too?

Parenting Perspective

When one child requires a laptop urgently for exams while other siblings also express a desire for their own device, tension and feelings of unfairness can arise. It is vital to handle this situation thoughtfully, ensuring all children comprehend the specific, immediate need for the device while also genuinely acknowledging their feelings of wanting the same. The objective is to balance practical necessity with fairness, focusing on the individual, current needs of each child. By establishing clear guidelines and openly discussing the reasoning behind the decision, you can help all siblings feel heard and valued, guaranteeing that the educational requirements of the examining child are met.

Acknowledging and Validating Each Child’s Needs

Begin the conversation by sincerely recognising the valid desires of every child.

  • Validate their feelings: “I understand that you all want a laptop, and it is important to me that each of you has the tools required to succeed. One of you needs it for exams, and I see that others are also eager for one. Let us discuss how we can make this work equitably.”
  • Acknowledging that their desires are genuine helps to diffuse initial frustration and establishes a respectful, non-judgmental tone for the discussion.

Explaining the Specific Educational Necessity

It is crucial to explain precisely why one child’s need for a laptop is more urgent and time-bound than the others’ desires.

  • Clarify the urgency: “Right now, the need for a laptop is particularly urgent for [child’s name] because they must use it for their formal exams. We have an immediate, non-negotiable responsibility to ensure they have the proper resources to perform their best.”
  • This clarification establishes that the decision is based on addressing a specific educational need tied to their current academic responsibility, not on parental favouritism.

Discussing Long-Term, Inclusive Solutions

Offer a commitment to future solutions to ensure the needs of all children will be addressed once the immediate pressure has passed.

  • Offer a commitment: “Once the exams are over, we will immediately revisit the situation as a family. We can start planning how to share devices effectively or explore other options, such as purchasing a dedicated family laptop or budgeting for individual devices for everyone.”
  • This reassures the siblings that the current arrangement is strictly temporary and that a long-term, comprehensive solution is imminent.

Implementing Shared Responsibility or Rotation

If a laptop is required by multiple children after the immediate exam period, implement a temporary or long-term plan for shared access.

  • Propose a plan: “Once the exams are finished, we can collaboratively create a fair schedule for using the laptop, or we can consider starting a family savings plan for an additional device that will meet everyone’s needs.”
  • This gives children a tangible sense of fairness and involvement in the decision-making process, while simultaneously teaching the important values of sharing and cooperation

Encouraging Empathy and Patience

Help the siblings understand that this prioritisation is for the collective benefit of the family and encourage them to exercise patience.

  • Appeal to family unity: “I know it is difficult, but sometimes we must make temporary decisions for the benefit of the family unit. I truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in making sure everyone’s critical needs are met in the best way possible.”
  • This fosters empathy and teaches children how to manage disappointment when their personal needs are temporarily deferred, reinforcing a sense of family unity and responsibility.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, fairness (Adl), empathy, and responsibility are central tenets governing interpersonal relations, especially within the family structure. Decisions concerning the allocation of material resources must be guided by justice, while maintaining an understanding that every individual’s needs and circumstances are unique. By addressing the issue of device access with both fairness and compassion, parents effectively teach children vital Islamic values regarding responsibility, patience, and mutual understanding

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.’

This verse serves as a reminder that each person is entrusted with responsibilities according to their current capacity. In the context of the laptop, prioritising the child who requires it for exams is based on their specific, immediate educational requirement, which constitutes their current, time-sensitive responsibility. Simultaneously, the other children are not forgotten, as a commitment to long-term solutions demonstrates sustained responsibility. This teaching aligns with the idea that the divine order ensures fairness according to each person’s unique needs and abilities.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1425, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.’

This Hadith profoundly encourages us to consider the well-being and needs of others, particularly in situations where resources are temporarily limited. By addressing the urgent need for a laptop with understanding and fairness, you are teaching your children the immense value of prioritising the needs of others and fostering cooperation within the family. This decision, made with empathy and justice, helps siblings appreciate the importance of responsibility, education, and family support, all of which are central to Islamic teachings.

By guiding your children through this sensitive process with fairness and clarity, you are helping them develop a balanced approach to both their own needs and the needs of others, in alignment with Islamic principles of justice, compassion, and family unity.
