Parenting Perspective
In today’s culture of instant gratification, commitment is often severely misunderstood as a limitation, while desire is relentlessly glorified as the only form of true freedom. Children grow up constantly surrounded by messages that urge them to: ‘Follow your heart, chase what you want, and do not let anything hold you back.’ Yet, Islam teaches the fundamental opposite: that real, sustainable strength lies not in chasing transient feelings, but in honouring sacred responsibilities. Helping your child absorb this profound truth will effectively prepare them to consistently choose stability over impulse, and enduring faithfulness over fleeting, temporary emotion.
Commitment is not the total absence of desire, it is the conscious control of desire for a high spiritual purpose. When a child learns that love, strong friendships, and meaningful goals all absolutely require sincere steadfastness (istiqamah), they begin to clearly see that loyalty is not a heavy burden but a profound blessing, the essential key to achieving lasting peace and mutual trust in every single relationship they form.
Teach the Beauty of Consistency
Start by teaching your child that commitment is the vital bridge that successfully transforms a mere intention into a measurable achievement. Say, ‘Anyone can start something with intense passion, but only the committed person sees it through to the end.’ Use simple examples they already understand: diligently studying for exams, consistently learning the noble Quran, or carefully caring for a family pet, all of these activities absolutely require consistency to genuinely bear worthwhile fruit.
Explain clearly that desire feels exciting but often fades quickly, whereas unwavering commitment deliberately builds deep meaning and value over extended time. This crucial distinction helps your child see that being constant and reliable is not boring, it is the fundamental quality that makes all sincere effort truly worthwhile.
Connect Commitment with Trustworthiness
Show your child convincingly that sincere commitment is a clear, visible sign of personal integrity. Say, ‘When you consistently keep your word, people naturally trust you. When you stay loyal to what is right, Allah Almighty honours you immensely.’
Encourage your child to view reliability as an integral part of their Iman (faith). Teach them that Muslims are known not primarily by their impulses, but by their promises and their character. Each time they successfully complete a task or fulfil a clear responsibility, offer specific praise: ‘You kept your word exactly as you promised, that shows real strength and commitment.’ This positive reinforcement naturally nurtures a deep, healthy pride in their personal dependability.
Explain That Desire Without Direction Leads to Regret
Help your child clearly understand that unchecked desire or impulse often leads directly to spiritual and emotional harm. Say, ‘Desire can be likened to fire, it gives necessary light and warmth when it is carefully controlled, but it quickly destroys everything when it is carelessly released and allowed to run wild.’
Explain that desires in themselves are not inherently sinful, it is entirely how we choose to handle them that matters most. When strong feelings or temptations arise, teach them to pause immediately and ask the vital question, ‘Does this choice bring me closer to Allah Almighty or take me further away from Him?’ That brief, crucial moment of reflection instantly transforms raw emotion into clear awareness, and awareness into necessary self control.
Use the Concept of Taqwa to Define Strength
Show your child clearly that sustained commitment flows naturally and reliably from Taqwa (God consciousness), the deep, inner awareness that Allah Almighty sees and knows all things. Say, ‘When you consciously stay true to something for Allah Almighty’s sake, even when that choice is immensely difficult or unpopular, He strengthens your heart and your resolve.’
Encourage them to view commitment in their faith, their studies, their friendships, and their family life as active training for lifelong steadfastness. Remind them that Taqwa provides the believer with perfect balance: they can deeply feel and experience emotions, but they consistently choose to act wisely and deliberately.
Teach Through Stories of Loyalty and Patience
Share compelling stories from the noble Quran and the sacred life of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that vividly highlight the virtues of endurance and profound devotion. For example, explain clearly how Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him) bravely resisted immense temptation because he valued Allah Almighty’s pleasure above all fleeting desire, and how Khadijah (may Allah Almighty be pleased with her) remained absolutely steadfast in her love and devoted support for holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ throughout their hardest years.
These powerful historical examples clearly demonstrate that commitment leads to lasting honour, while unchecked desire fades quickly and leaves regret. The more real and relevant you can make these stories, the more deeply they will shape your child’s inner understanding of spiritual strength.
Encourage Patience in Pursuit
Tell your child directly, ‘Everything truly valuable takes sincere time including the growth of faith, the process of learning, and the cultivation of lasting love.’ Explain that patience (sabr) is the essential companion of commitment. Help them to practice this virtue in small, daily ways: finishing a difficult task before allowing themselves to relax, deliberately saving up for something they deeply desire, or choosing to quickly forgive instead of reacting impulsively to anger.
When they experience the genuine, rewarding peace that comes from patience, be it success, inner calm, or mutual respect, they will instinctively associate commitment with profound fulfilment, rather than with mere frustration.
Model Commitment in Everyday Life
Children instinctively learn far more from what they observe you living than from what you merely say. Consistently keep your promises, speak the clear truth, and openly show perseverance when facing challenges. When you manage to remain calm and steadfast through difficulties, they clearly see that commitment brings immense dignity. When they observe you praying regularly or reliably fulfilling family duties without complaint or resentment, they learn and understand that loyalty is a deep act of faith, not just a cold obligation.
Use simple, daily examples: ‘I consistently maintain my five prayers because that spiritual connection is the most important thing to me,’ or ‘I stay diligently committed to my work because Allah Almighty loves reliable perseverance.’ Such small, transparent lessons leave incredibly deep and lasting impressions.
Spiritual Insight
Islam universally honours those believers who live their lives with Istiqaamah, unwavering steadfastness in both their faith and their actions. The noble Quran and the Sunnah teach clearly that sustained commitment successfully transforms raw desire into sincere devotion and effectively turns fleeting human feelings into profound, lasting purpose.
Steadfastness as a Mark of True Faith
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Fussilat (41), Verse 30:
‘Indeed, those who say, “Our Lord is Allah Almighty,” and then remain steadfast, the angels descend upon them [saying], “Do not fear and do not grieve, but receive glad tidings of Paradise, which you were promised…”’
This magnificent aayat clearly teaches that true honour lies in constancy and consistency. Teach your child that Allah Almighty rewards those who remain firm in their faith and moral principles, even when they are severely tempted or challenged by the world. It is not uncontrolled desire that earns the ultimate reward of Paradise, but sincere discipline and enduring steadfastness.
Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s Praise for Steadfast Commitment
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1970, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘The most beloved deed to Allah Almighty is that which is done regularly, even if it is small.’
This Hadees beautifully demonstrates that Allah Almighty values consistent constancy over emotional intensity or passion. It reminds your child that faith, deep love, and meaningful work all absolutely require steady, deliberate effort, not just fleeting bursts of emotion. The person who consistently remains true to their word, even quietly, is spiritually stronger than the one who acts passionately for a moment and then quickly fades away.
When your child sincerely learns to value commitment over uncontrolled desire, they begin to understand that lasting happiness is not achieved by chasing every feeling that crosses their path, but by actively nurturing faithfulness, spiritual patience, and clear purpose in their life.
Through your calm personal example, wise words, and gentle guidance, they will ultimately understand that commitment is not the end of personal freedom, it is, in fact, its very highest form. This is because the individual who wisely controls their desires purely for Allah Almighty’s sake is not truly bound by anything, they are spiritually free, personally dignified, and eternally honoured in both this world and the next by the One who values sincere loyalty above all else: Allah Almighty.
