Parenting Perspective
As children reach puberty, their awareness of the world changes. They begin to notice attraction, physical appearance, and emotions that are new to them. These feelings are natural, not sinful; they mark the beginning of emotional maturity. However, without guidance, this curiosity can lead to confusion or guilt. The Islamic teaching of lowering the gaze is not meant to shame or restrict them; it is a principle that teaches dignity, self-respect, and control over one’s inner world. Helping your child understand this with warmth and reason will shape a lifelong habit of purity and balance.
Start with a Calm Approach
Begin the conversation in a relaxed setting, without embarrassment or secrecy. You could say, ‘Allah Almighty gives every believer this guidance so that our hearts stay clean and peaceful. Lowering the gaze means being mindful of what we look at and how we see others: with respect, not intrusive curiosity’. When you speak gently and naturally, your child will feel safe to ask questions.
Explain the Purpose of the Guidance
Children understand better when they know the reason behind a rule. You can say, ‘Our eyes are like doors to our hearts. What we keep looking at settles in our thoughts and affects our feelings. Allah Almighty asks us to lower our gaze so that we protect our hearts from unnecessary desires and distractions’. This helps them to see the wisdom behind the command rather than viewing it as a restriction.
Connect Modesty with Honour
Tell your child that lowering the gaze is not about avoiding people but about treating everyone with dignity. You can say, ‘When you lower your gaze, you show that you respect others and also protect your own peace. Islam teaches us to value people for their character, not their appearance’. This reframes modesty as empowerment, not limitation.
Acknowledge the Struggle as Growth
If your child admits to finding this difficult, reassure them that Allah Almighty understands their effort. You could say, ‘It takes time and intention. Even just trying to look away or reminding yourself to do so counts as an act of worship’. Encouraging progress rather than demanding perfection builds sincerity instead of guilt.
Lead by Example
Children notice how their parents behave more than what they say. Be conscious of how you carry yourself, how you speak, and what you look at. When they see you practising modesty with ease and confidence, they will follow it naturally as a part of their faith, not as a response to pressure.
Spiritual Insight
Lowering the gaze is one of the ways Islam protects both the heart and society. It trains believers to control their impulses before they can lead to harm. This practice nurtures focus, inner calm, and respect, which are qualities that beautify both the soul and the community.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30-31:
‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them…’
This verse clearly shows that modesty and self-restraint are equal responsibilities for both men and women. Parents can explain it like this: ‘Allah Almighty is not forbidding you from seeing the world. He is teaching you how to look with respect, to protect your heart, not to burden it. Lowering the gaze is about purity of vision and purity of intention’.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6243, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The adultery of the eyes is looking (at that which is forbidden), the adultery of the tongue is speaking, and the heart desires and wishes, and the private parts confirm that or deny it.’
This Hadith explains that sin can begin with the eyes and the heart, not with action alone. You can tell your child, ‘When you guard your eyes, you protect your heart from desires that could disturb your peace. Allah Almighty rewards even that small act of restraint because it keeps your faith strong’.
When children learn that lowering the gaze is about spiritual discipline, not fear or guilt, they begin to see it as a source of strength. It teaches them control, purity, and honour in a world full of distractions. With gentle guidance and patient explanation, your child will realise that Islam’s teachings protect beauty rather than suppress it, by teaching believers to see with clarity, respect, and reverence for every soul as a creation of Allah Almighty.
