How can I explain to my child that protecting themselves is part of protecting their honour?

Parenting Perspective

The powerful word honour (izzah and karamah) can often sound distant or reserved for adults in a child’s mind, perhaps associated only with formal settings. Yet, in Islam, honour is defined as a living, breathing quality, it is the quiet dignity with which one treats their body, manages their speech, and makes their conscious choices. Teaching your child that actively protecting themselves is a fundamental part of protecting their honour means helping them see clearly that self respect and self protection are profoundly connected. This crucial understanding is not rooted in fear or unnecessary shame, but in them fully knowing their true worth and value in the blessed sight of Allah Almighty.

When your child sincerely learns that their body and their dignity are sacred gifts entrusted to them (amanat), they naturally begin to act with a calm, conscious awareness: their deliberate choices matter significantly because those choices reflect who they are as a person and Whom they ultimately serve. This profound understanding organically transforms the concept of safety into self respect, and genuine modesty into spiritual empowerment.

Redefine Honour for Their Understanding

Begin this conversation with immediate warmth and clear explanation. Say: ‘Honour means knowing that Allah Almighty has made you unique and special, and then treating yourself in every way that clearly shows you understand and value your worth.’

Explain that this necessary self respect includes their physical body, their careful words, their personal privacy, and their deepest emotions. Teach them that self protection, which includes decisively saying no when something feels wrong, walking away immediately from disrespect, or courageously speaking up when they feel unsafe, is not disobedience or rebellion. It is, in fact, honouring what Allah Almighty has already made precious and sacred within them.

This crucial reframing helps your child intrinsically link self respect with spiritual worth, rather than confusing it with human pride or arrogance.

Teach That Honour Is Not Just External

Children frequently associate the concept of honour primarily with outward appearances, such as how one dresses or behaves in front of other people. You must thoughtfully expand that view: honour spiritually begins deep within the heart. Say: ‘Protecting your honour starts with how you truly see yourself. When you sincerely believe that Allah Almighty has honoured you uniquely, you naturally start making confident choices that consistently keep you safe, respected, and pure.’

Encourage them to conceive of honour as something that actively lives inside them, shaping both how they allow others to treat them, and equally, how they treat others with courtesy and respect.

Use Examples of Everyday Protection

Relate the abstract concept of honour to simple, immediately relatable scenarios in their daily lives. For example:

  • Saying no firmly to mean spirited or hurtful jokes.
  • Refusing to share private, personal pictures or information.
  • Setting strong, necessary boundaries on their online social platforms.
  • Choosing friends who consistently treat them with genuine respect.

Explain clearly: ‘Each single time you protect yourself like this, you are actively protecting your honour. You are powerfully saying, ‘I know my true worth, and I demand to be respected.’’

These practical, actionable examples make the abstract idea of dignity feel real, achievable, and immediately relevant.

Encourage Assertiveness Without Aggression

Teach your child that protecting their honour is not about misplaced pride or emotional defensiveness, it is an act of calm, internal self assurance. Role play appropriate responses for when someone crosses their boundaries, using language that is both polite and absolutely firm:

  • ‘I do not feel comfortable with that action.’
  • ‘Please stop that immediately, thank you.’
  • ‘I need to go and tell someone trusted about this now.’

This practical exercise successfully empowers them to act decisively while simultaneously remaining respectful, a necessary balance that accurately reflects their inner dignity.

Reinforce That Allah Almighty Loves Those Who Guard Themselves

Assure your child constantly that when they sincerely take care of their body, their heart, and their choices, Allah Almighty is incredibly pleased with them. Say: ‘Each time you protect yourself from potential harm or sin, you are actively obeying Allah Almighty and honouring the valuable gift He gave you.’

This spiritual perspective replaces any lingering fear with a strong sense of purpose. It genuinely makes the necessary act of self protection feel like a continuous act of sincere worship, not merely a defensive reaction.

Spiritual Insight

Islam fundamentally defines honour not as social status or a distinguished family name, but as purity of character and a close relationship with Allah Almighty. Therefore, actively protecting oneself from harm, sin, temptation, or indecency is an undeniable act of worship, it faithfully guards the heart from humiliation and the precious soul from spiritual injury. The noble Quran and the Sunnah both repeatedly remind us that Allah Almighty has intrinsically ennobled every believer with inherent dignity, and that safeguarding it is a sacred, Divine duty.

Human Dignity in the noble Quran

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 70:

‘And We have certainly honoured the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference…’

This aayat powerfully teaches that every single human being carries inherent honour and worth directly from Allah Almighty. Share this profound truth with your child to remind them that their body, their thinking mind, and their pure spirit are all an integral part of this honour, and that protecting themselves is a genuine act of gratitude and submission to their Creator.

Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s Teaching on Modesty and Self Respect

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 9, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Faith consists of more than sixty branches, and modesty is a branch of faith.’

Explain to your child that modesty (Haya) in this significant Hadees does not solely refer to outward clothing, it encompasses deeply guarding one’s heart, careful words, and overall behaviour. Tell your child: ‘Each time you act with sincere modesty or speak with genuine respect, you are simultaneously showing your faith and actively protecting your honour.’

When your child deeply learns that self protection is not fear, but a spiritual act of faith, they begin to move through life with quiet strength and profound awareness. They will fully understand that honour is not something others grant or can easily take away, it is something they must constantly and diligently guard within their own heart.

Over time, this crucial understanding will naturally nurture both confidence and deep humility. Your child will ultimately learn that conscientiously protecting their body and their choices is a sincere way of saying ‘Thank You’ to Allah Almighty for the immense honour He has already graciously bestowed upon them. And with that lasting awareness, they will confidently carry themselves with true balance: strong without arrogance, modest without shame, and forever conscious that the greatest Protector of all honour is the One who originally granted it.
