Normalising Bodily Changes

  • Reassuring Growth Patterns: Begin by reassuring your child that bodies grow at different rates, and sudden weight gain is able to reflect natural development, growth spurts, or hormonal changes. Use simple, comforting language: ‘Sometimes our bodies grow quickly, and that is a normal part of getting bigger and stronger,’ or ‘Everyone grows differently, and our weight is able to change as we get taller.’ This approach helps children understand that their experiences are shared and expected, reducing fear or shame.
  • Emphasising Function Over Appearance: Shift the focus from appearance to what the body is able to do. Highlight energy, strength, and the capacity to play, learn, and explore. For example: ‘You are able to run, jump, and play so well—your body is supporting you,’ or ‘Your growth is helping you become stronger for your activities.’ This perspective fosters a positive body image by valuing function over form.
  • Encouraging Open Dialogue: Create a safe space for children to ask questions about their changing bodies. Invite curiosity without judgment: ‘It is okay to wonder why your body feels different,’ or ‘Let us talk about any questions you have about how your body grows.’ Answer with facts and reassurance, rather than criticism or comparison.
  • Modelling Acceptance: Parents’ responses to their own and others’ bodies serve as powerful examples. Avoid negative comments about your own or others’ weight. Instead, model acceptance and gratitude: ‘I notice changes in my body too, and that is a normal part of life,’ or ‘We all grow at different rates, and that is okay.’
  • Reinforcing Positive Self-Image: Focus on the child’s character, achievements, and efforts rather than physical appearance. Praise perseverance, kindness, and creativity regularly. For instance: ‘I noticed how patiently you completed your drawing,’ or ‘You helped your friend today, that was wonderful.’ This strengthens self esteem and redirects attention from body size to inner qualities.

Parents should understand that sudden, non proportional weight gain often precedes a height spurt, making it a healthy sign of impending growth rather than a concern. Normalising this fluctuation is crucial to preventing the child from associating temporary body changes with failure or guilt. By consistently steering conversation toward effort and contribution, the child learns to anchor their self worth in enduring traits, making them resilient to external pressures regarding body size.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that the body is a trust (amanah) from Allah Almighty, and that growth and change are part of divine design. Recognising and accepting natural development nurtures gratitude, self care, and respect for the body.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anbiya (21), Verse 30:

‘And We made from water every living thing. Then will they not believe?..’

This verse reminds us that human bodies, with all their processes and changes, are created with wisdom and purpose. Children are able to be taught that growth including weight changes is part of Allah Almighty’s careful design, encouraging acceptance and appreciation of their own bodies as gifts to be nurtured.

It is recorded in Sahih al Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Your body has a right over you.’

This Hadith emphasises the importance of self-care and body-positivity. It highlights that our bodies are a trust from Allah, and we are responsible for treating them with respect and care. Parents are able to use this teaching to reinforce the idea that taking care of one’s body, including accepting natural changes, is an act of fulfilling one’s duties towards Allah Almighty. This perspective elevates bodily changes from a source of anxiety to a reminder of the precious trust placed in us.
