How can I connect hydration with my child’s favourite activities, like reading or gaming?

Parenting Perspective

When children are deeply absorbed in reading, gaming, or any immersive hobby, hydration often fades into the background. They can forget to drink for hours until tiredness sets in. The challenge for parents is not to interrupt their flow, but to gently integrate the habit of drinking water into the rhythm of what they already enjoy.

Explain to your child that just as a phone needs charging to run smoothly, their brain needs water to stay alert. You could tell them, ‘When you are reading or playing, your brain uses a lot of energy, and water helps it to recharge.’ Children respond better when you connect drinking water with tangible benefits, such as a sharper memory for reading or quicker reaction times for gaming

Make It Part of the Setting

Keep water visibly available near their activity space. For a reader, you can place a small jug and a cup beside their books. For a gamer, a bottle with a straw that can be used easily between levels is ideal. The key is to make it accessible without creating a distraction. If the bottle is within easy reach, the habit can grow without any conscious effort. This is about creating a supportive environment

Turn It into a Ritual

Habits thrive when they are wrapped in a ritual. You could say, ‘Before you start your next chapter, let us take a sip of water together,’ or ‘Before you press play, let us refill our bottles.’ Over time, this repetition links hydration with a feeling of pleasure, not obligation. When your child sits down to start, you can hand them their water and say, ‘This will help your mind to stay clear for the fun part.’ This makes the habit a natural and positive precursor to their hobby.

Invite Them to Personalise It

Children are more likely to follow through with a habit when they feel a sense of ownership. You could encourage them to design their own water bottle with stickers or a logo from their favourite game. Letting them choose their own special cup for reading time or their bottle for gaming gives hydration a personal identity, turning it into a part of their lifestyle rather than an imposed rule

Spiritual Insight

Islam views the act of caring for one’s body and mind as a part of our gratitude for the blessings of Allah. When we teach children to nourish themselves—even through something as ordinary as drinking water—we are teaching them about thankfulness (shukr) and their responsibility over their trust (amanah).

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 48:

And it is He (Allah Almighty) Who transmits the winds with the good news (of pollination), benchmarking the designed (pathways) of His Mercy; and We (Allah Almighty) because water to descend from the skies in a purified form.

This verse connects water directly to divine mercy, reminding us that every drop is a continuation of Allah’s care for His creation. When your child drinks while reading or gaming, they are participating in that mercy by sustaining their focus and balance. It becomes an act of quiet remembrance.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his back straight…’

Although this hadith refers to moderation in food, its wisdom extends to finding balance in all things. Teaching a child moderation in both their screen time and their nourishment creates a sense of inner harmony. When water accompanies their reading or gaming, they are reminded that caring for the body only enhances the joy of the soul. Over time, hydration becomes more than just a health rule; it becomes a rhythm of mindfulness.
