How can I clarify that empowerment in Islam means fulfilling purpose, not imitating others?

Parenting Perspective

Modern culture often tells young people that empowerment means aggressively doing whatever others do: dressing alike, speaking alike, and generally living alike, even when such imitation fundamentally conflicts with their faith or their inner peace. Many young Muslims, especially daughters, feel truly torn between wanting to be strong and fearing that following Islam will make them seem restricted or outdated. As a committed parent, you can help them clearly see that true empowerment in Islam is never about mere imitation or rebellion; it is deeply about living with purpose: genuinely knowing who you are, understanding why you were created, and diligently seeking to please Whom you serve.

Empowerment in Islam is intrinsically rooted in identity, never in a superficial image. It decisively begins when an individual understands that true success is not found in desperately copying the world, but in thoughtfully aligning with Allah Almighty’s wisdom. By carefully guiding your children to this profound truth, you help them build an unshakable confidence that does not depend on fleeting public approval, but on unwavering spiritual conviction.

Beginning with the Question of Purpose

Start this vital discussion by asking your child reflective, open ended questions: ‘Why do you think Allah Almighty created you?‘ ‘What makes someone truly strong and influential?‘

Allow them the necessary space to explore these grand ideas honestly before you offer your explanation. Then, gently share, ‘Empowerment in Islam means knowing your divine purpose and living it courageously every day. It means sincerely using your God given abilities to do good, not just to desperately be noticed or seen.’

When children successfully connect the concept of empowerment to purpose, they naturally stop comparing themselves to others and begin to consciously focus on their personal growth and spiritual sincerity.

Redefining Strength as Steadfastness

Explain clearly that true strength is never about mindlessly copying the loudest voice or impulsively following every social trend. Real strength is the unwavering ability to firmly hold onto one’s core values even when everyone else around them deliberately abandons them. Tell them, ‘It takes far more moral courage to say no to what you know is wrong than it takes to follow what everyone else is currently doing.’

Use relatable examples, such as a classmate who sincerely chooses honesty over momentary popularity, or a peer who faithfully prays even when it feels awkward or uncomfortable. These small, daily acts of faith clearly teach them that empowerment is not imitation; it is true independence guided by an unshakeable belief.

Highlighting Individual Gifts as Paths to Empowerment

Remind your children constantly that Allah Almighty intentionally created every single person with unique strengths and specific talents. Empowerment is the conscious act of recognising those precious gifts and purposefully using them for goodness and service. A daughter’s innate empathy, a son’s noble courage, or a child’s natural creativity are all equally valid forms of strength when they are sincerely used in dedicated service to others and as an act of profound gratitude to Allah Almighty.

You might simply say, ‘The world measures empowerment by attention and visibility. Islam measures it by pure, sincere intention.’ This fundamental distinction helps them to clearly see that the truest, most authentic form of self expression is deliberately living their life sincerely for the ultimate pleasure of Allah Almighty.

Showing the Power of Obedience

Modern secular thinking often incorrectly portrays obedience as weakness or submission, but Islam powerfully teaches that obedience to Allah Almighty is the highest form of empowerment and liberation. Explain clearly to your children that respectfully submitting to divine wisdom completely frees us from any crippling dependence on other people’s unreliable opinions.

Say, ‘When you consciously choose to live your life to please Allah Almighty, you are no longer controlled or manipulated by what others around you think of your choices. That deep assurance is real freedom, and that, fundamentally, is empowerment.’

Share personal examples from your own life of specific times when choosing faith over fleeting popularity genuinely brought you inner peace and lasting confidence. Children learn the meaning of authenticity most deeply when they observe it consistently modelled in their parents.

Encouraging Thoughtful Role Models

Discuss exemplary Muslim men and women, both from the past and the present day, who visibly lived their lives with both strength and spiritual sincerity. Teach them clearly that Maryam (peace be upon her) stood absolutely firm in her purity, Khadijah (R.A) wisely used her significant wealth to support the truth, and Aisha (R.A) actively educated a whole generation of scholars and jurists. These magnificent figures were highly empowered because they intentionally lived purposefully, never because they desperately tried to imitate others or conform to social norms.

Spiritual Insight

Beyond temporary worldly narratives of power and influence lies the unwavering divine wisdom of Islam, which rightfully defines empowerment through sincere devotion and dutiful service. The noble Quran and the teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consistently show that the highest form of honour is never achieved through imitation, but through fulfilling one’s divine purpose with purity of intention, immense humility, and spiritual courage.

Purpose as the Source of Honour

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Adh Dhariyat (51), Verse 56:

‘And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me…‘

This verse immediately reveals the unshakeable foundation of all true empowerment: that the core human purpose is to actively know, profoundly love, and diligently serve Allah Almighty. Every other secondary role, personal goal, or temporary identity only finds true, lasting meaning when it successfully connects back to this ultimate divine purpose.

Teach your children clearly that empowerment in Islam begins with authentically understanding why we truly exist. When they sincerely realise that their entire lives are deliberately designed for worship (through prayer, deep learning, kindness, and public service), they will completely stop seeking external validation through imitation. Their profound sense of self worth will then flow directly from sincerely fulfilling their purpose.

The Honour of Living by One’s Values

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6416, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller.‘

This Hadith powerfully teaches us the concept of independence from worldly imitation. Holy  Prophet Muhammad ﷺ constantly reminded believers that their true and eternal home is not this temporary world, so they should never lose themselves trying to desperately blend into its constantly fleeting trends and images.

When your children fully understand this powerful message, they will clearly see that empowerment resides in maintaining a firm moral direction, never in seeking easy social acceptance. Like wise travellers, they can confidently walk through the world, respectfully acknowledging others, but always firmly guided by their own unshakeable compass of faith.

This profound understanding cultivates both humility and strength: humility in recognising that this earthly life is temporary, and immense strength in knowing that their true ultimate purpose is eternal.

In a modern culture that often aggressively equates empowerment with external rebellion or shallow imitation, your calm and consistent guidance can successfully help your children reclaim its true, spiritual meaning. Show them clearly that Islam never attempts to suppress their genuine individuality; it thoughtfully refines it. It teaches them how to wisely use their unique gifts with profound purpose, how to use their voice with clear wisdom, and how to use their freedom with deep gratitude and responsibility.

Encourage them sincerely to actively admire those who visibly live with unwavering conviction rather than simple conformity, and gently remind them that every single act done sincerely for Allah Almighty, whether it is dedicated studying, actively helping others, or making a difficult moral choice, is a true and powerful expression of empowerment through faith.

Over time, your children will ultimately come to see that Islam never asks them to simply copy anyone; it sincerely calls them to become their best, most authentic selves: purposeful, balanced, and courageous. When they faithfully learn that true empowerment is definitively fulfilling the purpose for which they were perfectly created, they will completely stop chasing external validation from the world and will instead seek honour in the eyes of Allah Almighty the One who reliably grants ultimate power, lasting peace, and true dignity to those who sincerely live for His sacred sake.
