Parenting Perspective
As children grow, decision making can feel overwhelming, whether it involves choosing friends, subjects, or future goals. They often wrestle with the question, “What if I make the wrong choice?” This can lead to anxiety and tangled thoughts. Duʿā, however, offers an anchor, a spiritual pause that can clear away confusion and restore a sense of calm.
When children learn to bring Allah Almighty into their decision making process, they discover that peace comes not from certainty, but from trust. Duʿā helps them to realise that clarity is not about knowing every answer, but about knowing that Allah is guiding them, even when they cannot see the path ahead.
The Power of a Deliberate Pause
Encourage your child to take a brief, sincere pause before making an important decision. It can be as simple as closing their eyes and saying, ‘Ya Allah, please guide me to what is best and keep my heart calm.’
This pause shifts the moment from one of impulse to one of intention. It teaches that clarity often appears in stillness, when the heart is quiet enough to hear faith over fear.
A Simple Prayer for Guidance (Istikhārah)
Even young children can understand a simplified version of istikhārah, the prayer for guidance. You can explain it as, ‘When we do not know what is best, we can ask Allah to choose for us and to make us feel peaceful about it.’
They can make a short duʿā, such as, ‘Ya Allah, if this is good for me, please make it easy. If it is not, please guide me to something better.’ This trains their heart to rely on the wisdom of Allah over their own emotions, a vital skill for life’s many crossroads.
Combining Breath and Remembrance
Before discussing or deciding something important, you can teach your child to take slow, mindful breaths.
- Inhale: ‘Bismillah.’
- Exhale: ‘Ya Allah, please calm my heart.’
This practice aligns a physical sense of calm with a spiritual feeling of presence. The act of breathing while remembering Allah can reset both the body and the mind, helping decisions to come from a place of reflection rather than reaction.
Using Duʿā to Organise Thoughts
You can help your child to write down their worries or their options in a small notebook, and then to add a short duʿā beside each one.
- ‘Ya Allah, please help me to choose wisely.’
- ‘Ya Allah, please make this choice feel clear.’
- ‘Ya Allah, please protect me from any regret.’
This transforms decision making from a stressful task into a dialogue with Allah Almighty. Seeing their thoughts written beside their duʿās reminds them that they are not alone.
Modelling Calm Decision Making
Before making your own family decisions, from small purchases to major plans, you can say your duʿā aloud: ‘Ya Allah, if this is good for us, please make it happen easily and put your blessing in it.’ Hearing you do this normalises the act of spiritual consultation. Children can learn that wise people do not rush; they pause, they pray, and then they proceed.
Understanding Peace as the First Answer
Children often want instant answers. You can explain that duʿā first brings a sense of calmness, and that clarity often follows. Tell them, ‘When your heart feels peaceful after making duʿā, that peace is an answer from Allah.’ This helps them to interpret a feeling of calm not as a coincidence, but as a form of divine reassurance.
Spiritual Insight
Duʿā before a decision nurtures a heart that trusts, a mind that reflects, and a soul that submits. It replaces haste with humility and fear with faith. A child who learns to seek the help of Allah in their choices will grow into an adult who can walk through uncertainty with serenity, confident not because they control the outcomes, but because they rely on the One who does.
Trust in Allah’s Guidance in the Noble Quran
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 159:
‘And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]…’
Parents can explain, ‘This verse means we should do our best, make duʿā, and then trust Allah to take care of the rest. That is how our hearts can stay calm.’
The Prophet’s ﷺ Duʿā for Divine Direction
It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 3253, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘When one of you is concerned about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two Rak’ah of non-obligatory prayer, then say: O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek Your assistance by Your power, and I ask of You from Your great bounty.’
This Hadith shows that the Prophet ﷺ taught his companions to seek peace and clarity through duʿā before making their choices. Parents can say, ‘Even the Prophet ﷺ did not rush his decisions. He prayed first, trusted in Allah, and then moved forward.’
When children learn to pause for duʿā before making a decision, they gain something the world cannot teach them: a calmness that does not depend on the outcome. One day, when they stand at a crossroad in their own lives, instead of panicking, they will be able to take a deep breath and whisper, ‘Ya Allah, please guide me.’
In that stillness, they will find both clarity and contentment, the twin gifts that come only from trusting the Almighty.
