How can children cope when parents explain school trip costs with honesty?

Parenting Perspective

When a child brings home a permission slip for an exciting school trip, their initial joy can quickly collide with a family’s financial reality. For parents who are managing a tight budget, saying ‘no’ or ‘not this time’ can feel heartbreaking. Many are tempted to avoid the conversation altogether, hoping that a simple distraction will soften the inevitable disappointment. However, children often sense more than we think. Silence on the matter can leave room for confusion, shame, or misplaced self-blame, leading them to think: ‘Maybe we are not good enough’ or ‘Maybe my parents just do not care’.

The Power of Honest Communication

Honesty, when it is offered with warmth and empathy, is far less damaging than avoidance. Explaining school trip costs openly teaches a child that money is not a limitless resource, but it also shows them that a deep sense of trust and respect exists within their family. A child who is spoken to truthfully can learn that financial challenges are not personal failures, but are simply a part of life’s realities. This approach helps in several ways:

  • It reduces their shame by removing the space for them to create negative self-stories.
  • It builds their trust, as a parent who is honest is demonstrating a respect that the child will internalise as security.
  • It develops their resilience, helping them to understand that missing out on one event does not erase their overall worth or happiness.

Framing the Message with Empathy

How a parent frames the message makes all the difference. Compare the cold finality of, ‘We cannot afford it, so stop asking’, with the gentle honesty of, ‘This trip costs a lot, and right now we need to use our money for other essentials. I know that it feels disappointing, and I really wish it were different, but this does not change how much you matter to us’. The first statement closes a door, while the second opens one for empathy, connection, and further dialogue. A parent can also help their child to see positive alternatives. Planning a special family outing, a picnic in the park, or even creating a smaller adventure at home can help to soften the sense of loss. The point is not to replicate the trip, but to show that joy and connection are always accessible.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches believers to live with both contentment and a deep trust in Allah Almighty’s plan, especially when facing material limitations. Explaining costs with honesty therefore becomes more than just a financial lesson; it becomes an opportunity to show a child that true dignity lies in living truthfully, and that our provision is always in Allah Almighty’s hands.

Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Taghaabun (64), Verse 16:

So, seek piety from Allah (Almighty) with your utmost capacity, and listen and obey, and spend for yourselves with what is goodness; and whoever is saved from the miserliness of soul, then those are the victorious people.

This verse reminds a family that their ability to spend is always relative; we are only ever responsible for that which is within our means. Teaching this to a child can help to ease their sense of missing out, as they come to see that their family is acting with integrity and wisdom, not out of neglect.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1051, that holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Richness does not mean having many possessions, but richness is being content with oneself.’

Sharing this profound wisdom allows a child to see that their self-worth is not tied to the cost of a school trip. A parent can gently say, ‘Our holy Prophet  taught us that real richness is being content. This trip is just one experience, but our family’s value comes from who we are, not from what we can pay for’.
