Parenting Perspective
Fear regarding the future is a challenge for many students today. Choosing a university degree can feel like an irreversible decision that dictates the entirety of their professional existence. This pressure often leads to a deep anxiety about making a mistake. It is important to help a student understand that a degree is a foundation rather than a destination. Most professional paths are not linear and allow for various changes as one gain experience. You should acknowledge their concern with empathy while providing a broader context for how careers evolve over time.
You can assist by encouraging the student to focus on transferable skills such as critical thinking. Explain that these abilities are valuable in almost any field they might enter. It is helpful to discuss lifelong learning, showing that education does not end with one qualification. By framing the degree as a starting point, you help them move away from the idea of ruin. You might share examples of individuals who have changed their careers to demonstrate that no path is locked forever. Providing this reassurance allows the student to choose with curiosity. They need to know that their personal worth is not solely determined by one academic choice.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond strategies and conversations, there lies the deeper nourishment that faith offers. Noble Quran and Hadith remind us that our journey is guided by Divine wisdom. Faith provides a student with a sense of being valued beyond every single academic achievement. When a student understands that their path is in the hands of the Creator, it helps ease the weight of decision making.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 216:
‘But perhaps you hate a thing, and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing, and it is bad for you. And Allah Almighty knows, while you know not’
This reminds us that our limited human perspective cannot always see the benefits of a path. It encourages the student to put forth their best effort while trusting that the outcome is managed by the wisdom of Allah Almighty. By reflecting on this Verse, a student can see that even a difficult choice can lead to blessings. It shifts the perspective toward trust in Allah Almighty.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2144, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘If you were to rely upon Allah Almighty as He should be relied upon, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds’
This teaches us that true security is found in relying upon the provision of Allah Almighty. For a student, this means that while planning is important, they do not need to fear for their future. Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always taught us to live with a heart full of trust. When a student learns that their sustenance is guaranteed, they can pursue education with a calm mind.
Supporting a student through these fears requires consistent validation and spiritual grounding. By providing clear guidance and a sense of Divine provision, you help them build a resilient heart. This balanced approach ensures they do not feel alone in their academic journey. As they grow, they will learn that their choices are steps on a larger path. Ultimately, your guidance helps them realise that peace is found in accepting oneself as a unique creation of Allah Almighty. This realization allows them to thrive with confidence, purpose, and direction.
