A Script to Help Siblings Handle the Quran Without Quarrels

Parenting Perspective

When siblings share time with the noble Quran, their different ages, personalities, or levels of enthusiasm can easily create tension. One may insist on turning the pages, while the other wants to be the first to read. A moment that should be filled with peace can become a contest of pride. The aim is not to prevent every disagreement, but to give them a script, a shared language of respect, so that handling the Quran becomes a lesson in harmony, not rivalry.

This script is more than just about manners; it is a framework that turns time with the Quran into an opportunity for building akhlaq, the beautiful character that Islam cherishes. When children learn to cooperate around something so sacred, they begin to treat each other with more gentleness in all areas of their lives.

The ‘Quran Together’ Script

Introduce a simple, repeatable script that both siblings can memorise and recite before they begin reading together. You can call it ‘Our Words for Quran Time’. It helps to set both the tone and the intention for this special act of worship.

Teach it line by line, inviting them to repeat the words softly after you.

  • ‘We come to the Quran with clean hands and kind hearts.’
  • ‘We take turns so that everyone can read with peace.’
  • ‘We do not rush, argue, or grab, because the Quran deserves calm.’
  • ‘When one of us reads, the other listens, and both of us receive a reward.’
  • ‘If we disagree, we will pause and say: Let’s remember why we are here, for the words of Allah.’

You could write these lines on a card and place it in your family’s Quran space. Encouraging them to read it together before they begin helps to internalise respect as a habit.

Turning Disagreements into Learning Moments

When a quarrel does arise, it is important to avoid anger. Instead, you can point gently to the script and ask, ‘Which of our special words can help us right now?’ Let them reflect and find the answer themselves. This reinforces self-awareness rather than a reliance on parental authority. When you see them reconcile, praise them openly: ‘You remembered our Quran words and stopped arguing. That is beautiful adab.’

Assigning Shared Responsibilities

Give each sibling a small task that reflects a sense of equality and contribution.

  • One can place the Mushaf carefully on its stand.
  • The other can open it to the chosen surah.
  • They can alternate each day on who reads first.

These small, structured roles help to prevent competition and teach cooperation. It helps them to realise that honouring the Quran also means honouring one another.

Spiritual Insight

Sibling unity in handling the Quran is a reflection of the unity that Allah Almighty commands among all believers. When children learn to approach the divine words without conflict, they are training their souls to prioritise harmony over ego, a trait that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

The Importance of Respect and Unity

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 10:

‘The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers, and fear Allah that you may receive mercy…’

This verse reminds us that creating peace between siblings is not a small domestic issue; it is an act that earns divine mercy. When children handle the Quran peacefully, they are embodying this command in one of the most sacred contexts possible.

The Prophetic Example of Gentle Cooperation

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6011, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The believer is gentle, kind, and easy to get along with; and there is no good in one who is neither gentle nor easy to get along with.’

This Hadith beautifully reinforces the lesson of sibling harmony. It reminds children that gentleness and cooperation are signs of true faith, while quarrelling and harshness contradict the character of a believer. By practising calmness and kindness during their Quran time, siblings are living the very manners that the Quran seeks to nurture.

The ‘Quran Together’ script can transform potential quarrels into moments of shared, positive intention. It gives your children a common language of peace that reflects the sacred text they hold.

Over time, you will notice a subtle growth. They may begin to wait for each other’s turn, lower their voices instinctively, or correct one another with kindness. These are not just good manners; they are signs that a divine respect has entered their hearts. As they grow, this script will linger in their memory, teaching them how to share space, resolve differences, and speak with gentleness in all of their relationships.
