How to Celebrate Mawlid Respectfully Across Different Viewpoints

How to Celebrate Mawlid

If your family or community celebrates Mawlid (as the majority of the Muslim world does), you may occasionally encounter relatives, friends, or community members who take a more cautious view. Here’s how to celebrate wholeheartedly while still being gracious toward those who see it differently.

Celebrate With Confidence, Not Apology

It’s worth starting from a place of confidence: celebrating Mawlid sits on strong, well-established scholarly ground, endorsed by centuries of respected scholars across most of the Muslim world. You don’t need to treat your celebration as a controversial choice requiring justification for the vast majority of Islamic history and geography; it has simply been what Muslims do to honour the Prophet

Extending Grace to a Different View

At the same time, a minority hold a more cautious position sincerely, out of genuine religious conviction rather than a wish to dampen anyone’s joy. Recognising that gives you room to celebrate fully while still being warm and respectful toward relatives or friends who choose not to formally participate.

Practical Ways to Keep the Peace

  • Invite, but never pressure, family members who may hold a different view
  • Keep the focus on elements almost everyone agrees on: seerah, charity, and salawat, so there’s always common ground to share
  • Avoid framing your celebration as “correcting” anyone else’s practice; let your own joy speak for itself
  • If hosting a mixed-community event, simply centre it on seerah education and remembrance, which resonates broadly regardless of position

Raising Children With Both Confidence and Respect

Children benefit from growing up seeing their family celebrate Mawlid joyfully and unapologetically, while also learning that other sincere, practising Muslims may approach it differently. That combination, ‘confident practice alongside respectful understanding’, is a valuable lesson in its own right.

A Season to Enjoy

Ultimately, Mawlid is meant to be a source of joy, connection, and renewed love for the Prophet . Celebrate it fully with your family, and extend the same warmth to those who mark the season differently.

Make this Mawlid one to remember. Our Seerah books for kids and Islamic children’s books are the perfect way to bring the celebration to life at home.
