Parenting Perspective
It is common for children to believe that prayer guarantees instant results, or that their effort alone can secure success. However, the true Islamic balance lies between prayer (Dua) and action (‘amal). Teaching your child that both are necessary helps them to develop a healthy sense of faith and responsibility. It shows them that while Allah Almighty controls the outcomes, they are accountable for striving with sincerity.
Explain the Balance Between Effort and Prayer
Tell your child, ‘Dua is how we ask for the help of Allah Almighty, and our effort is how we show that we are serious in our request’. This helps them to understand that prayer is not a replacement for hard work, but a way to bring divine blessing, or barakah, into it. For example, if they want to do well in their exams, encourage them to pray for ease and also to revise diligently. They will learn that true success combines hands that work with hearts that trust.
Model This Practice in Your Own Life
Let your child see you making Dua before you begin work, meetings, or other responsibilities. Say Bismillah when you start and Alhamdulillah when you finish. If something does not go as planned, avoid showing discouragement. Instead, you can say, ‘Allah Almighty knows what is best; my job was simply to try’. This calm acceptance teaches that prayer and effort together create peace, regardless of the outcome.
Celebrate Effort as a Form of Worship
When your child tries their best, even without achieving their specific goal, praise both their effort and their prayer. You could say, ‘I am so proud that you studied hard and also asked Allah Almighty for help. That is real success’. This teaches them that victory in Islam is not just in winning, but in striving with a sincere heart.
Share Stories of Prophetic Perseverance
Tell your child about the Prophets who made constant Dua but also continued to strive. The example of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) building the ark, or holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ working tirelessly for years before Islam spread widely, helps children to see that faith and effort are inseparable parts of success.
Through this balance, they learn that effort without prayer can lead to arrogance, and prayer without effort is merely wishful thinking. Together, they are faith in action.
Spiritual Insight
Noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teach that success flows from sincere striving that is supported by divine help. Dua aligns our effort with humility, reminding us that while we must act, it is Allah Almighty who decides the outcome.
The Connection Between Striving and Allah Almighty’s Help
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verse 69:
‘And those who strive for Us, We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah Almighty is with the doers of good…’
This verse beautifully captures the relationship between our action and divine guidance. Teaching this to your child helps them to see that Allah Almighty rewards movement, not passivity. When they make an effort and a prayer together, they place their trust in both the mercy of Allah Almighty and their personal responsibility.
The Prophetic Encouragement for Effort and Prayer
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 2664, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah Almighty than the weak believer, though there is good in both. Strive for that which benefits you, seek the help of Allah Almighty, and do not lose heart.’
This Hadith teaches that a believer’s strength lies in combining dedicated effort (‘strive for what benefits you’) with complete reliance (‘seek help from Allah Almighty’). Teaching this to your child makes them understand that faith is not about waiting idly; it is about working with belief.
Encourage your child to make Dua before starting any important task and to follow it with sincere effort. Tell them, ‘Your job is to try your best, and the mercy of Allah Almighty will take care of the rest’.
Over time, they will grow to see that success is not a competition between effort and prayer; it is their partnership. When both come together, hearts stay humble, work becomes worship, and every goal pursued in the name of Allah Almighty brings spiritual as well as worldly success.
