How can I remind them that every job done with care earns divine approval?

Parenting Perspective

In a world that often prizes speed and immediate results over sincerity and thoughtful effort, teaching your child that the care they put into every task is a form of worship can anchor their heart in faith. The Islamic tradition beautifully teaches that Allah Almighty values not only what we accomplish, but, more importantly, how we accomplish it. The intention and the quality of our effort are what truly matter. When you, as a parent, model attentiveness and integrity in your own work, you provide a living example for your children. They learn through observation that excellence and devotion are not separate qualities but are beautifully intertwined, and that every single job done with care, no matter how small or mundane, earns divine approval and brings light into one’s life. This understanding transforms work from a chore into a calling.

The Spiritual Nature of Effort

It is essential to help your child understand that the care and effort they invest in their tasks are, in themselves, spiritual acts. This elevates their daily responsibilities from the realm of the ordinary to the sacred. When you see them working neatly on their school assignments, speaking with kindness to a sibling, or completing a household chore properly, you can gently reinforce this connection. Tell them, ‘Allah Almighty loves when we do things with care and honesty’. This simple link between their action and their faith turns their daily duties into precious opportunities for spiritual growth and closeness to their Creator. It teaches them that their relationship with Allah Almighty is not confined to the prayer mat, but extends to every aspect of their lives, making every sincere effort an act of remembrance and gratitude.

The Living Example of Excellence

Children are profound observers, learning their most enduring lessons by watching how their parents navigate the world. Your personal work ethic is the most powerful sermon they will ever witness. If they see you performing your own duties with patience, responsibility, and a commitment to quality, even when no one else is watching, they will internalise the idea that integrity is what defines a person’s character. You can make this lesson explicit by saying aloud, in a natural way, ‘I am going to do this carefully because Allah Almighty loves excellence’. Over time, this practice normalises the idea that every careful act, not just the formal rituals of prayer or the giving of charity, is a form of devotion. This lived example shows them that faith is not a separate part of life, but the very lens through which a believer sees and engages with the world.

Cultivating the Mindset of Ihsan

You can introduce your child to the beautiful and profound concept of Ihsan, which means doing things with a sense of beauty and excellence, as if one can see Allah Almighty watching. This is the highest level of faith in action. Encourage them to give their very best in all they do, not for the sake of receiving praise from people, but purely for the pleasure of their Lord. You can guide them with gentle reminders, such as, ‘When you do your work properly, even if no one else on earth sees it, remember that Allah Almighty sees it, and He is pleased with your sincerity’. This nurtures a powerful inner motivation that is rooted in a desire to please the One who matters most. It develops humility, as the focus is on the divine audience, not a human one. This divine awareness is the heart of Ihsan and the key to finding joy in sincere effort.

Praising Intention over Perfection

When your child completes a task, it is important to focus your praise on their intention and the quality of their effort rather than on achieving a flawless result. This approach builds resilience and protects them from the anxieties of perfectionism. You can say, ‘I can see that you tried your very best with that, and it is that sincere care that Allah Almighty loves and rewards’. This teaches them a crucial spiritual lesson: that the heart behind the work matters far more than the applause it might receive. It grounds their self worth not in their achievements, but in their character. They learn to value their own sincerity and to find peace in the knowledge that their pure intention is what reaches Allah Almighty, regardless of the worldly outcome.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that the qualities of sincerity (Ikhlas) and excellence (Ihsan) have the power to transform our everyday, mundane actions into profound acts of worship. Noble Quran and the timeless sayings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consistently show that the care one takes in one’s work is not merely a sign of diligence; it is an act of deep and sincere devotion that is beloved to our Creator.

When Allah Almighty Loves Excellence in Deeds

Noble Quran reminds us that the very purpose of our lives is a test of the quality, not the quantity, of our deeds. Allah Almighty is most interested in who is ‘best in deed’, which points to the sincerity and excellence of our actions.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mulk (67), Verse 2:

‘[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed…’

This verse teaches us a profound lesson. Life itself is an opportunity to demonstrate the quality of our character. Parents can use this verse to explain to their children that sincere care in small, everyday actions can be more pleasing to Allah Almighty than large, impressive acts that are performed carelessly or for show. True excellence, therefore, is measured by our intention and the thoroughness of our effort, not by our status or the recognition we receive from others.

The Prophetic Call to Perfection in All Things

Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught a universal principle of Ihsan, a call to do everything with a sense of perfection, mercy, and mindfulness. This principle extends to every single action a believer performs.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 1955, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Indeed Allah Almighty has prescribed excellence (Ihsan) in all things. So when you kill, kill well; and when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and let him spare suffering to the animal.’

Although this Hadith uses a specific and serious example, the underlying principle is universal. Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching that Allah Almighty loves excellence in all matters, whether it is an act of worship, our studies, our professional work, or how we help others.

When a child realises that doing things carefully and with attention to detail is not just a matter of good manners but is a direct response to a divine command, the act of being diligent is elevated into a beautiful form of worship.
