Parenting Perspective
As a parent, you may sometimes worry that your child compares their own small earnings, or what you are able to provide for them, to the grand expectations they see in the world around them. It is a natural and loving wish to want them to feel a sense of richness when they earn a modest amount or when you bring home a humble income. The key to nurturing this feeling lies in helping them to value the purity of the income rather than its size. When a child learns to perceive lawful earnings, no matter how small, as something honourable, sufficient, and blessed, you are planting within them a deep and enduring sense of dignity and contentment that will serve them for a lifetime. This is not about diminishing their ambition, but about grounding it in a foundation of faith and integrity.
The Purity of Provision Over Its Quantity
The conversation about the value of money can begin by gently reframing its purpose and worth. You can introduce the idea that in the sight of Allah Almighty, the source of our earnings is far more significant than the amount. You might say things like, ‘What truly matters is that this money comes from a good and honest place, a place that is pleasing to Allah Almighty’. This helps to teach your child that a small sum that is earned with complete honesty holds more value and blessing than a large sum that has been obtained through shortcuts or questionable means. You can use real life examples to make this concept tangible. Perhaps your child decides to make and sell handmade bracelets, earning only a few pounds from their effort. This is a perfect moment to commend their honesty, their creativity, and their hard work, placing the emphasis on the integrity of their effort and not just on the amount they made. By consistently praising the quality of the earning process, you slowly but surely shift their focus from mere quantity to spiritual and ethical quality.
Celebrating Effort as an Act of Gratitude
When your child uses the money they have earned, however small the amount, to do something good, it is an opportunity to celebrate and reinforce the beauty of lawful provision. Whether they choose to help someone, to save responsibly for something meaningful, or simply to express their gratitude, you can acknowledge the spiritual significance of their action. For instance, if they earn a couple of pounds from helping a neighbour with a chore, and they decide to give a small portion to charity or to save some of it, you can elevate this simple act. At home, you could say, ‘You chose to make an effort to earn, and then you chose to give from what you earned. Allah Almighty loves and blesses that entire process, from the honest work to the generous heart’. This transforms a simple financial transaction into a meaningful spiritual practice. Over time, they begin to see that even a modest and lawful income carries with it a special honour and has the potential for a great and positive impact.
The Silent Sermon of a Contented Home
A child learns far more from your behaviour and your state of being than they do from your words. If they consistently observe you expressing happiness and contentment with a small, lawful income, and they see you resisting the temptation of easy but questionable gains, they will absorb this message into the very fabric of their character. You might articulate this feeling by saying, ‘We may not have large sums of money, but what we have is pure and clean, and that brings a special kind of peace into our home that money cannot buy’. When your child witnesses this calm, ethical way of living and your unwavering faith in the sufficiency of Allah Almighty’s provision, they will internalise the profound truth that being lawful, even if it means living with less, is a true and undeniable sign of spiritual wealth.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond the financial lessons and practical examples, the Islamic tradition teaches that the source and the intention behind our earnings are what ultimately define their true worth. When children learn that lawful earnings carry a special, unseen blessing, or barakah, and that unlawful earnings bring with them a sense of spiritual unrest, they begin to measure their success in a completely different way. They come to realise that Allah Almighty honours sincere and patient effort, a modest income, and a righteous life far more than He does a life of empty and unethical abundance.
The Divine Multiplication of Sincere Offerings
Noble Quran illustrates a beautiful principle: that even the smallest of offerings, when they are pure and placed in the path of Allah Almighty, can be multiplied by Him in ways we cannot even imagine. Their value is not in their initial size, but in their potential for divine blessing.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 261:
‘The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah Almighty is like a seed of grain that sprouts seven ears; in every ear there are a hundred grains. Allah Almighty multiplies for whom He wills, and Allah Almighty is all Encompassing and Knowing…’
Teaching this verse to your child helps them to understand that it is not the amount of the earning that matters most, but the righteousness of the act itself. When their earnings are lawful and their spending is for a good purpose, the potential for blessing is immense, even if the initial income seems modest to the eye.
The True Measure of Wealth Lies in the Heart
The teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ guide us to redefine our understanding of what it means to be truly wealthy. He taught that genuine richness is found not in material possessions, but in the contentment and sincerity of the soul.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 1051, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Richness does not lie in the abundance of (worldly) goods but richness is the richness of the soul (heart, self).’
This profound Hadith teaches that true wealth is an internal state, not an external condition. When you share this wisdom with your child, you encourage them to see that their lawful earnings are a means of nurturing their soul.
They build patience, cultivate gratitude, and draw them closer to Allah Almighty. In this light, a small halal income becomes a powerful vehicle for achieving an immense spiritual richness that no amount of money can ever buy.
