Parenting Perspective
When children see the noble Quran placed on a high shelf or respectfully set above other books, their curiosity is natural. Answering their sincere question of ‘Why?’ is an important moment. Our explanation should awaken a sense of love and understanding, rather than simply enforcing a rule.
Placing the Quran in a high position is not about creating distance or fear. It is a visible expression of the honour we hold for the words of Allah Almighty in our lives. By teaching this gently, you help your child to see reverence as an act of joy, not one of rigid rules.
Begin with Meaning, Not Rules
Instead of starting with instructions, begin with what the act symbolises. You could explain, ‘We put the Quran in a high place because it holds the highest honour in our hearts. It reminds us that the words of Allah Almighty are above all other words.’
You can compare it to how we protect things we value, such as a precious gift or a fragile ornament. We place them carefully because they matter to us. You could then add, ‘The Quran is more valuable than anything else we own, so we show our love by giving it a special place.’ This approach helps your child to understand that reverence grows from affection, not from a fear of punishment.
Provide Clear, Physical Examples
Children learn through what they can see and touch. Show them how the Quran is placed on a clean surface, such as a stand (rihal) or a high shelf, away from any clutter. Let them help you to tidy that space and say together, ‘This is the most honoured spot in our home.’
Creating a small ‘Quran Corner’, with a soft cloth and perhaps a lamp, can also be a beautiful activity. This teaches that we are not keeping the Quran out of reach, but keeping it in a place of honour, like a welcome guest of light in your home.
Connect Physical Respect to Inner Reverence
As your child grows, you can explain that honouring the Quran’s physical position is a reminder to give it the same high position in our hearts, above our own desires and opinions. You could say, ‘We keep the Quran high on the shelf to remind ourselves to keep its guidance high in our decisions.’ This connection turns an outward habit into an inward awareness.
Teach with Calmness and Consistency
Avoid using language that is based on fear, such as, ‘Never put the Quran down low, or Allah will be angry.’ Instead, correct mistakes gently: ‘Let’s lift that up. The words of Allah deserve the best place.’ If they accidentally place it incorrectly, smile and invite them to fix it with you. This calm correction teaches mindfulness through encouragement, not guilt.
Spiritual Insight
Placing the Quran in a high position is a symbol of our desire to raise its meaning above the noise of worldly life. It is an outward reflection of an inner respect. The noble Quran itself commands us to honour the signs of Allah, for doing so is an act that purifies the heart.
Honouring the Signs of Allah in the Quran
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hajj (22), Verse 32:
‘That (is so). And whoever honours the symbols of Allah, indeed it is from the piety of hearts…’
This verse reminds us that showing respect for what Allah has made sacred is not about outward form alone; it flows from an inner piety. By placing the Quran in a high position, we are expressing what our hearts already know: that no words deserve greater honour than the words of Allah Almighty.
The Prophetic Teaching on Reverence
It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 357, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Part of showing respect to Allah is showing respect to the elder, the carrier of the Quran, and the just ruler.’
This teaches us that this respect is a way of honouring Allah Himself, whether it is shown towards people of knowledge or to the words of the revelation. By teaching your child to handle and place the Quran with dignity, you are helping them to fulfil this prophetic ethic of reverence.
When your child understands why the Quran is placed in a high position, they no longer see it as a rule to be obeyed but as a symbol to be cherished. The shelf becomes a signpost pointing to a greater truth: that the words of Allah deserve the highest place not only in our homes but in our hearts.
You will soon notice them straightening the Mushaf quietly or pausing before touching it with unwashed hands. These are the small, beautiful signs that reverence has moved from simple imitation to a deep and sincere understanding. As they grow, this habit will transform into a lifelong commitment to keep the message of the Quran higher than all else, exactly where divine truth belongs.
