How do I help my child notice Quranic values when watching shows or news?

Parenting Perspective

In a world where entertainment and media are powerful influences, one of the most important skills you can teach your child is discernment. This is the ability to filter what they see through the lens of the noble Quran, gently awakening their inner compass so they can begin to notice what aligns with truth, justice, and compassion. The goal is not censorship, but consciousness.

Watch Together with Gentle Curiosity

Rather than criticising your child’s choice of programmes, try joining them. Sit beside them and watch for a little while. Afterwards, you can ask questions that spark reflection instead of defensiveness, such as, ‘What did you think about how that character treated their friends?’ or ‘How might the Quran guide us to act in that kind of situation?’ Your tone should be curious, not corrective. The point is to encourage critical thinking, not to control their reaction.

Introduce the ‘Spot the Value’ Habit

You can introduce a playful family activity called ‘Spot the Value.’ Each time you watch something together, whether it is a film or a news clip, invite everyone to notice a moral quality or behaviour and relate it to a Quranic principle. For example, when a character shows honesty, you can connect it to the value of sidq (truthfulness) praised in the Quran. When characters forgive each other, you can link it to rahmah (mercy). This simple practice can transform media time into reflection time without sermons or tension.

Guide, Do Not Preach

It can be tempting to immediately point out what is ‘wrong’ in modern shows or in the news. However, constant criticism can make the Quran feel restrictive rather than enlightening. Instead, try to show how divine values can bring balance and beauty. For instance, when the news shows a story of conflict, you could say, ‘The Quran teaches us to make peace wherever possible. How do you think these people could act differently?’ By framing questions in this way, you help your child to apply the Quran as guidance, not judgment.

Empower Their Own Voice of Reflection

As children grow, they need to feel that their opinions are trusted. You could ask, ‘If you were to make a show inspired by Quranic values, what kind of hero would you create?’ or ‘How might Prophet Muhammad ﷺ have responded in that scene?’ This empowers them to integrate what they learn, rather than just memorise it. These conversations can help to make spiritual reflection a natural part of ordinary life.

When They Choose Content You Dislike

If your child is watching something with questionable messages, it is best to avoid a direct confrontation. Instead, you can open a conversation by asking, ‘What did you think the story was trying to say?’ After listening fully, you can then gently ask, ‘Does that message feel in line with what Allah Almighty loves for us?’ Such questions teach the skill of self-evaluation, which is far more enduring than parental control.

Spiritual Insight

Guiding children to view the world through Quranic values helps them to live in the world without becoming of the world. They learn to carry the noble Quran as a light within them, one that shines quietly in their choices, their reactions, and their interpretations.

The Quranic Call for Discernment and Wisdom

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 63:

‘And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them, they say [words of] peace…’

This verse reminds us that true believers do not mirror the world’s noise; they respond with grace and clarity. Helping your child to notice Quranic values while watching shows or the news teaches them to walk through life’s chaos with that same quiet dignity, seeing through the confusion without losing their compassion.

The Prophetic Teaching on Seeing Through Divine Guidance

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2378, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘A person is upon the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.’

This Hadith teaches us that the company we keep, even through our screens, shapes our hearts. By training your child to discern Quranic values in the media they consume, you are helping them to ‘choose their companions’ wisely, filtering what influences them through their faith.

When you guide your child in this way, you are not shielding them from the world; you are preparing them to engage with it wisely. They learn that entertainment and the news can either dull the heart or awaken it, depending on how they watch.

Over time, they will start to pause and quietly reflect, ‘Would Allah Almighty be pleased with this attitude?’ That question alone signifies a deep transformation, a sign that the Quran has become a part of their thinking. Your home will fill with mindful conversations, and screens will stop being distractions, instead becoming mirrors that reflect the very values the Quran came to illuminate.
