What can parents do to remind children that the Sunnah is timeless wisdom?

Parenting Perspective

For a child, the practices of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, rooted in a different time and place, can sometimes seem like distant historical customs rather than a living source of guidance. It is the role of parents to bridge this perceived gap, gently revealing the Sunnah not as a collection of cultural relics, but as a profound and timeless system of wisdom that speaks to the core of the human condition in every era.

Focusing on Principles, Not Just Practices

The key is to help your child look beyond the specific form of an action to the universal principle it embodies. Explain that the Prophet’s ﷺ teachings were never intended to be confined to a single culture; they were divine principles for cultivating human excellence. His advice on moderation in eating, for example, is the very foundation of modern physical and mental well-being. His emphasis on cleanliness is the essence of personal hygiene, and his deep empathy for others is the blueprint for what is now called emotional intelligence. By focusing on these core values, the Sunnah is revealed as a guide to becoming a better, healthier, and more compassionate person, a goal that is as relevant today as it was fourteen centuries ago.

The Power of the Lived Example

While explanations are helpful, the most powerful lessons are unspoken. A parent’s own conduct is the most convincing proof of the Sunnah’s timeless relevance. When you respond to a difficult situation with a calm tone, resolve a disagreement with fairness, or interact with others with honesty, you are silently communicating the beauty and wisdom of his way. Encourage questions and exploration. When a child is free to ask how a prophetic teaching applies to a modern dilemma, and sees it demonstrated in the lives of the people they trust most, they begin to recognise its divine and universal nature for themselves.

Spiritual Insight

The sacred texts establish the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ not as a temporary guide for his time, but as an eternal and binding source of wisdom for all generations that follow. His example is inextricably linked to the divine revelation itself, making it a timeless and indispensable component of a believer’s faith.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hashr (59), Verse 7:

‘…And whatever the Messenger has given you — take; and whatever he has forbidden you — refrain from…’

This verse is a divine command that transcends time. It does not say, ‘Whatever the Messenger gave the people of his era,’ but is phrased in a way that addresses all believers for all time. The instruction to ‘take’ his guidance is absolute. This teaches us that his wisdom, his laws, and his ethical example are not subject to historical obsolescence. They are divinely protected principles, as relevant and necessary for navigating the complexities of the 21st century as they were for the nascent Muslim community in Madinah.

It is recorded in Mishkaat Al Masaabih, Hadith 186, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘As long as you hold fast to two things which I have left among you, you will not go astray.’

This Hadith is a profound assurance and a clear roadmap for humanity. The Prophet ﷺ presents the Quran and his Sunnah not as two separate sources, but as an intertwined and complete package of guidance that serves as a permanent safeguard against misguidance. The Book of Allah provides the divine, unchanging principles, while the Sunnah provides the living, breathing, and perfect application of those principles. Reminding children of this powerful statement nurtures a deep and abiding respect for the prophetic tradition. It teaches them that to hold fast to the Sunnah is to hold fast to a rope that will keep them safe and guided, no matter how the currents of time may change around them.
