Parenting Perspective
Young individuals, whether facing the rigorous demands of examinations or navigating the intense scrutiny of peer pressure, experience stress that can feel overwhelming. To effectively connect the concept of the holy Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ patience (sabr) to these modern challenges, parents must illustrate that his endurance was not passive resignation, but an active reliance upon Allah Almighty amidst duress.
Patience as Action, Not Inaction
The key distinction to convey is that sabr is not synonymous with simply doing nothing or silently enduring hardship. Instead, it is the profound spiritual commitment to expending maximum effort in one’s duty while simultaneously surrendering the final result completely to Allah Almighty. Highlight that the Prophet ﷺ faced considerable pressure—from constant criticism and public mockery to periods of social loneliness and setbacks in his mission—yet he never allowed these external pressures to erode his fundamental trust in his Creator.
When your child exhibits anxiety related to academic performance or social standing, offer a calming intervention rooted in the prophetic example. You might say, ‘Let us pause now and take a deep breath, and remember how the Prophet ﷺ maintained his composure when people openly scorned him.’ Share the reality that he was meticulous in his planning and diligent in his hard work, but the ultimate outcome was always surrendered to Allah. To embed this practically, establish family habits that reflect this reliance, such as reciting a short du’a before beginning study sessions or repeating the powerful phrase, Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs) when uncertainty about results arises.
Reframing Effort and Success
This approach effectively reframes patience as dynamic action, rather than passive resignation. It positions consistent effort and thorough preparation as the part belonging to the believer, while the worry over success or failure belongs to Allah Almighty. By viewing their challenges through this lens, children begin to realise that true success is not solely defined by grades or social acceptance, but rather by the inner peace that stems from trusting Allah Almighty with every outcome, precisely as the Prophet ﷺ did throughout his life. This understanding provides resilience against the inevitable pressures of adolescent life.
Spiritual Insight
The spiritual status of patience (sabr) is exceptionally high in Islam, serving as a direct pathway to receiving divine companionship and ensuring that earthly difficulties serve a higher, refining purpose in the believer’s journey towards Allah Almighty.
The Quran directly instructs the believers to utilise patience as a primary tool for seeking aid, making it clear that this virtue guarantees the immediate support and presence of the Divine.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 153:
‘O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer; indeed, Allah is with the patient…’
This verse serves as a fundamental theological anchor for the parent’s teaching: patience attracts divine companionship. Especially when facing intense difficulty, such as the mental strain of exams or social rejection, remembering that Allah is with the patient individual offers an unparalleled sense of strength and belonging, far surpassing any temporary societal validation.
The prophetic tradition offers immense consolation by linking the smallest of struggles endured patiently to the great reward of sin expiation, transforming suffering into a means of spiritual ascent.
It is recorded in Sahih al Bukhari, 5641, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.’
By connecting the understandable stress of examinations or social trials to this universal principle, children gain a mature perspective. Every challenge, when met with sabr, is consciously repurposed; it becomes a form of purification and a means of drawing closer to Allah Almighty. They understand that enduring the difficulty, while striving their best, actively cleanses their record and deepens their spiritual connection, perfectly embodying the unwavering resolve shown by the Prophet ﷺ.
