What examples show the Prophet ‏ﷺ‏ using strength to serve others?

Parenting Perspective

Children naturally admire physical strength: the ability to carry, build, or win. Parents can help them understand that in Islam, true strength is not about showing power, but about consciously using it to help others. The holy Prophet Muhammad ‏ﷺ‏ demonstrated this principle throughout every stage of his life. He was strong in body, steady in heart, and profoundly humble in action. Teaching children these examples helps them see that power is meaningful only when it eases another person’s burden or protects someone who is in need.

Carrying His Own Weight in Work

When the Prophet ‏ﷺ‏ and his companions were building the mosque in Madinah, he did not stand aside as a leader simply giving orders. He actively lifted stones with them, smiling as he worked. Companions described how he carried heavy bricks on his blessed back while reciting, ‘O Allah, there is no life except the life of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajireen.’ This moment shows that true leadership means serving first. You can tell your child, ‘The Prophet ‏ﷺ could have easily asked others to work, but he joined them because he wanted to share the effort and the reward.’

Helping with Household Chores

At home, the Prophet ‏ﷺ never used his authority to demand comfort or ease. Sayyidah Aisha (RA) said that he mended his own clothes, milked his own goat, and helped diligently with the household work. This was not because he lacked the means for help, but because he wanted to demonstrate gentleness through service. Parents can remind children, ‘If the Prophet ‏ﷺ could sweep the floor and sew his own clothes, then helping at home is truly an honour, not a tiresome chore.’

Protecting Others with Mercy

In battle, the Prophet ‏ﷺ was strong and courageous, yet his actions were never driven by anger or pride. His strength was always guided by profound compassion. When his enemies were finally defeated, he famously forgave many of them, saying, ‘Go, for you are free.’ This ultimate act of mercy shows that the greatest power lies in restraint and forgiveness. You can explain, ‘The Prophet ‏ﷺ used his strength not to harm, but to protect people and give them safety and freedom. That is what makes a person truly powerful.’

Showing Strength Through Patience

Even when he was publicly mocked or severely mistreated, he did not retaliate. His absolute control of his anger was an outstanding example of inner strength. Say to your child, ‘He was stronger than anyone, but he never used his power to hurt. He used it instead to stay patient and kind.’ When children hear these tangible examples, they begin to understand that strength used to serve others makes the body noble and the heart beloved to Allah Almighty.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that strength is a blessing only when it is guided by humility and a commitment to service. The Prophet ‏ﷺ embodied this balance perfectly, using his immense power for goodness and restraint.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Qasas (28), Verses 77:

‘And seek, through what Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter, but do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek corruption on the earth. Indeed, Allah does not like the corrupters…’

This verse reminds believers that every ability, including physical strength, must be employed for good. Parents can explain, ‘Allah gives us strength to build, help, and protect never to harm or boast. When we use it kindly, we are perfectly following the Sunnah of the Prophet ‏ﷺ.’

The value of the strong believer is further clarified in the Sunnah:

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ‏ﷺ‏ said:

‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.’

This Hadith shows that Allah loves strength that is used with sincerity and compassion. The Prophet ‏ﷺ was the living embodiment of this teaching strong in body, strong in heart, and boundless in mercy.

Together, the verse and Hadith demonstrate that the Prophet ‏ﷺ’s strength was never self-serving. He used it to build homes for worship, to protect the weak, to serve his family, and to forgive his enemies. Parents who share these stories help their children see that strength is not loud or proud; it is quiet, kind, and rooted in service to Allah Almighty. Every time a child uses their power to help rather than to boast, they walk a little closer to the example of the Prophet Muhammad ‏ﷺ the strongest and the most gentle of all creation.
