How do I explain that different children naturally have different energy levels?

Parenting Perspective

Children are quick to notice differences among themselves. One child may be able to run for hours, while another prefers quiet, calm play. When a child compares their own energy to that of others, they can feel inadequate or even abnormal. The key is to help them understand that every person’s body has its own unique rhythm, established by Allah Almighty. Teaching this concept early on builds self-acceptance and reduces the silent pressure for a child to match the pace of others.

Use the Language of Uniqueness

You can begin by saying, ‘Allah Almighty made every body different, just as every flower grows at its own speed’. This simple analogy helps turn comparison into curiosity. Through it, children learn that variation is not a flaw but a beautiful part of creation. Use daily examples they can see, noting how some people are early risers while others feel more energetic later in the day. Linking these patterns to real life helps individuality feel both normal and safe.

Explain That Energy is Not a Competition

Children often interpret having high energy as a sign of worth, thinking, ‘If I get tired faster, I must be weaker’. It is important to correct this misunderstanding gently. You could explain, ‘Having a quiet kind of energy is also very powerful, as it helps you to focus and notice important details’. Give equal praise to both calm persistence and active strength. When children understand that all types of energy serve different, valuable purposes, they will stop judging themselves based on the stamina of others.

Model a Balanced Perspective at Home

Parents play a crucial role in shaping how children value energy. If the adults in a home glorify constant activity, children may begin to fear rest or moments of quiet. It is vital to create a family rhythm where quiet is respected as much as motion. When one sibling is running and another is reading, celebrate both activities. You might say, ‘Each of you has a way of using your energy that fits who you are’. This approach normalises diversity within the family, demonstrating that fairness does not mean sameness.

Encourage Awareness Over Comparison

Encourage your child to tune into their own body without measuring it against their peers. A helpful phrase is, ‘Let us listen to what your energy is telling you today’. This simple instruction turns their focus inward. Over time, they will begin to observe their own patterns, noticing when they feel alert and when they need to pause. They will learn that achieving their own personal balance matters more than matching anyone else’s rhythm.

Spiritual Insight

The variety seen in human energy levels is a sign of the mercy and wisdom of Allah Almighty. Just as no two faces or voices are identical, no two bodies possess the exact same measures of strength, endurance, or pace.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar Rum (30), Verses 22:

‘And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colours. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge…’

This verse invites us to recognise diversity as a deliberate and beautiful act of creation. Parents can use this to show children that differences in energy are just as purposeful as differences in language or appearance. You might say, ‘Allah Almighty designed you with your own special kind of energy, the perfect amount for what He wants you to achieve’. This connects their individuality with divine intention, replacing comparison with gratitude.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.’

This hadith reminds parents to teach strength in balanced terms. True strength is not merely about having the most energy; it is about using the energy one has wisely and with sincerity. When children learn that every form of effort counts, whether it is gentle or vigorous, they begin to value their intention over their speed.

Help your child see that energy differences are not signs of unfairness but are signs of a world designed in perfect variety. When they learn to honour their own pace, they also learn to appreciate the pace of others without envy or pride. This understanding builds humility, gratitude, and inner peace, which are the real signs of strength.
