What Helps Children Practise Sleeping on Their Right Side Calmly?

Parenting Perspective

Many children resist specific sleep positions simply because they are not yet aware of their purpose or feel a sense of restriction. Beneath the surface, this resistance often stems from discomfort, curiosity, or a feeling of being commanded. Helping children understand that sleeping on their right side is a Sunnah practice encourages them to approach it with willingness rather than obligation. When children grasp that this habit promotes both health and follows the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, it becomes a meaningful choice rather than an imposed rule. Start by introducing the idea gently during bedtime, explaining the dual benefits for comfort and wellbeing. Narrate it in a relatable way: ‘Sleeping on your right side helps your body rest properly, just like the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us.’ Making the connection to a loved and respected figure encourages emulation and frames the habit as honourable.

Creating Comfort and Calm

Parents must ensure that the child’s bed, pillow, and blanket support their body comfortably. Children are far more likely to adopt positions that feel pleasant. Parents can model the behaviour by lying on their right side for a few minutes before the child sleeps, saying, ‘See how this feels comfortable and peaceful.’ Using soft guidance rather than insistence reduces resistance and stress around bedtime.

  • Gentle Modelling: Parents should lie on their right side initially to demonstrate the position’s calmness.
  • Ritual Inclusion: Incorporate the position into the bedtime ritual, using a quiet, soothing voice.
  • Comfort Check: Ensure the pillow is not too high and the child feels secure and warm.

Parent scripts can help: ‘Let us lie on our right side together and rest like the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did.’ This turns a simple habit into a shared, calm ritual. Over time, the repetition becomes natural, and the child internalises the Sunnah without coercion.

Linking Habit to Mindfulness and Spiritual Calm

Teach children to pair this specific sleeping position with a brief reflection or dua before sleep. This reinforces that sleep is not only physical rest but also a spiritual opportunity. Saying a short prayer while lying on the right side such as seeking protection and blessings for the night helps the child associate the position with calm, safety, and intention.

Celebrate progress subtly to reinforce the habit. Recognise moments when the child positions themselves correctly without prompting, using gentle praise: ‘I see you are lying on your right side and making your body ready for good rest. That is thoughtful and wise.’ This encouragement strengthens intrinsic motivation while reinforcing the Sunnah as a practice of self-care and intention.

Spiritual Insight

Sleeping in the recommended Sunnah position reflects mindfulness and care for the body, which Allah Almighty has entrusted to us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that even our rest can be intentional, blending physical health with spiritual discipline.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Muminun (23), Verse 18:

‘And We have made your sleep as a means of rest…’

This verse reminds parents and children that sleep is a divine provision for restoration. Positioning the body as recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ enhances this rest, aligning daily life with both physical and spiritual wisdom. It clearly illustrates that even small, consistent habits can carry profound intention and care.

It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 2367, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘When you lie down on your right side, say the name of Allah, and place your right hand under your cheek.’

This Hadith provides practical, spiritual guidance for bedtime, linking the physical habit directly to remembrance of Allah. Parents can help children understand that following this Sunnah is an act of devotion, transforming bedtime into a moment of calm, intention, and spiritual alignment. By gently modelling the habit, creating comfort, and connecting it to mindfulness and prayer, children learn to practise lying on their right side naturally. This establishes a routine where rest becomes both nurturing and spiritually meaningful, embedding the Sunnah seamlessly into their daily life.
