What habits keep children humble while celebrating their growth?

Parenting Perspective

As children mature and begin to notice their growing abilities, whether in school, sports, or social confidence, they naturally feel proud of what they can now do. This sense of pride is healthy when it fuels motivation, but it can easily turn into arrogance if humility is not nurtured alongside it. Parents can teach that real celebration lies not in boasting but in gratitude, respect, and kindness. The key is to help children form daily habits that keep the heart soft even as their achievements multiply.

Start by making Alhamdulillah part of every celebration. Whenever your child accomplishes something, a good grade, a personal best, or even learning a new skill, respond with joy and remembrance: ‘That is wonderful! Say Alhamdulillah, Allah Almighty helped you do it.’ Linking success with gratitude builds a natural rhythm of humility. Over time, the child learns that every victory belongs first to Allah Almighty.

Encourage Shared Joy and Respect

Encourage them to notice others’ achievements as well. Teach them to say kind words when someone else succeeds, such as, ‘Masha’Allah, that is amazing!’ This simple habit trains the heart to rejoice in others’ blessings rather than compare or compete. You can model it in family life by openly appreciating siblings or relatives for their small efforts.

Strategies to Keep Gratitude Central

Redirect praise: when children boast, gently remind them, ‘It is Allah who gave us strong backs and balance.’

Encourage humility: highlight that everyone learns at a different pace, and we should never look down on others.

Share responsibility: remind them that abilities are not just for personal pride but for helping and serving others.

Practice thankfulness rituals: say Alhamdulillah together after milestones, whether small or big.

Model Reflection and Self-Compassion

Introduce reflection as a quiet nightly habit. Before bed, ask, ‘What are you thankful for today?’ or, ‘What did you learn that made you kinder or stronger?’ Such questions encourage inward gratitude rather than outward boasting. Parents should also model resilience. Share simple reflections aloud: ‘I took care of myself today, Alhamdulillah.’

Finally, celebrate growth with joy but not extravagance. Modesty in words, tone, and expression teaches balance. Treating achievements as moments of growth rather than trophies teaches that success, when held with humility, becomes a form of worship.

Spiritual Insight

Islam beautifully connects humility with gratitude, teaching that both must accompany every stage of growth. Children must learn early that Allah Almighty loves hearts that remain soft, even when their bodies, minds, or talents grow strong. When humility becomes a habit, growth turns from self-admiration into remembrance.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nahl (16), Verse 53:

‘And whatever you have of favour, it is from Allah…’

This reminds us that every ability, gift, and improvement originates from the mercy of Allah Almighty. By teaching children to repeat this truth in daily life, parents help them celebrate progress without falling into pride.

It is recorded in Mishkaat Al Masaabih, Hadith 1889, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘He who is humble for the sake of Allah, Allah will exalt him…’

This teaches that true greatness does not come from showing superiority but from lowering oneself in humility. When a child learns this, humility becomes a source of divine honour.

Encourage your child to begin and end each day with short remembrance, a quiet SubhanAllah or Alhamdulillah, linking their routines with awareness of Allah Almighty’s care. In every celebration of strength or achievement, remind them: ‘Allah Almighty chose you to grow in this way so you can do good with it.’ In this balance of happiness and humility lies the essence of Islamic upbringing.
