Parenting Perspective
Rapid growth during the pre-teen and early teenage years can be both exciting and confusing for children. Their limbs lengthen, clothes suddenly no longer fit, and the body begins to change in unpredictable ways. Without reassurance, these shifts can create anxiety or self-consciousness. Preparing a child for growth means teaching calm understanding: that change is not a loss of control, but a clear sign of Allah Almighty’s perfect timing and design.
Start Early and Normalise the Process
Begin by starting conversations early and naturally. Mention growth as something positive and expected. You can say, ‘Soon your body will start growing faster; that is how Allah Almighty helps you become stronger and wiser.’ Presenting it as a gift rather than a mystery builds curiosity instead of fear.
Simple, Honest Explanations: Explain the expected changes in simple, honest terms. When children know what to expect, such as longer limbs, bigger feet, or changes in appetite, surprises feel less overwhelming. Keep explanations age-appropriate but clear. If they ask questions, answer calmly without embarrassment; your comfort gives them the confidence to ask again later.
Normalise the Difference: Every child grows at their own pace; some experience growth earlier or later than their peers. Emphasise that both are equally normal. Say, ‘Everyone’s body has its own schedule, and yours is exactly right for you.’ This reassurance helps prevent damaging comparison and shame.
Support Physical Comfort: Support physical comfort throughout the growth phases. Provide clothes that fit comfortably, ensure good nutrition, and encourage light activity to ease stiffness. Teach gentle stretching or walks to help manage any growth pains. When children feel their parents’ care through these small gestures, they feel secure within their changing bodies.
Maintain Emotional Openness
Maintain emotional openness throughout this process. Some children may feel clumsy, shy, or unsure about their new size. Listen when they share discomfort and respond with calm empathy: ‘I know it feels strange, but this is your body learning something new.’ Avoid teasing or minimising their feelings.
Connect growth with purpose. Explain that Allah Almighty gives each stage of development a reason, to prepare them for greater responsibility and ability. Encourage gratitude: ‘Your growth means your body is healthy and ready to serve you for all the good things ahead.’
By combining education, empathy, and faith, parents transform fear into appreciation. Children learn that rapid change is not chaos but divine care unfolding quietly within them.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches that all creation follows a rhythm of growth and transformation designed by Allah Almighty. Every change, in height, strength, or ability, is a powerful reminder of His wisdom and power. Guiding children to see their physical growth through this lens nurtures both calmness and gratitude.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verse 45:
‘Allah created every living creature from water. Of them are those that move on their bellies, and on two legs, and on four. Allah creates what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent…’
This Ayah reflects the diversity and purpose in every stage of creation. Parents can use it to teach that human growth too is shaped with divine precision; every change is part of Allah Almighty’s perfect plan.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3689, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all matters…’
This Hadith reminds parents to approach their child’s growth journey with softness. The process is not one to rush or control, but to guide with compassion and patience. Encourage your child to make dua such as, ‘O Allah, help me grow strong and thankful.’ This connects physical change to spiritual reflection.
When parents respond to growth with calm guidance and gratitude, children learn that their changing bodies are not to be feared but honoured. They discover that growing taller, stronger, and wiser are signs of life unfolding exactly as Allah Almighty intended, each stage another step in His beautiful design.
