Parenting Perspective
Stories are powerful tools for teaching, especially when explaining abstract values such as privacy and dignity. Children may not immediately grasp why they need privacy, but they connect deeply with examples that show how it protects peace, respect, and confidence. When parents share stories where characters use privacy wisely and honourably, children begin to see it as a sign of strength, not secrecy.
The Story of Prophet Yusuf (AS) and Self-Respect
Tell your child the story of how Prophet Yusuf (AS) protected his dignity, even when he was alone. When faced with temptation, he chose modesty and turned to Allah Almighty for help. You can explain, ‘Prophet Yusuf (AS) showed that real strength comes from guarding yourself when no one is watching’. This teaches that privacy is not about fearing people but about maintaining self-respect before Allah Almighty.
The Example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Respectful Manners
Share examples of how the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always respected the privacy of others. He never entered a home without permission and would knock three times before seeking to enter. He also taught his companions to ask for permission before seeing someone in their personal space. These habits show that respecting the boundaries of others is a fundamental part of our Islamic manners (adab).
The Story of the Modest Companion, Uthman ibn Affan (RA)
You can mention how one companion of the Prophet ﷺ, Uthman ibn Affan (RA), was so modest that the angels felt shy in his presence. The Prophet ﷺ himself said that even the angels showed Uthman honour because of his profound modesty. This story inspires children to see dignity as something that even the unseen creation values and respects.
Connect the Stories to Daily Life
After sharing these stories, it is important to relate them to your child’s own world. You can say, ‘When you change in private or knock before entering a room, you are following the beautiful example that our Prophets and their companions taught us’. Connecting these lessons to everyday actions helps to transform powerful stories into lived values.
Through such storytelling, privacy becomes an expression of nobility, a trait that reflects inner peace and honour, not distance or fear.
Spiritual Insight
Islam honours privacy as a safeguard for dignity. It protects hearts from embarrassment, relationships from disrespect, and communities from harm. Teaching children that privacy is beloved to Allah Almighty helps them to act with intention and self-respect, even when they are unseen.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nur (24), Verse 27:
‘O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants; that is best for you; perhaps you will be reminded.’
This verse highlights that even entering a person’s home requires their permission, a beautiful example of how respecting privacy preserves harmony and honour between people.
It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 4861, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘If a person looks into your house without permission and you throw a stone at him and it puts out his eye, there is no blame on you.’
This Hadith illustrates how deeply Islam protects privacy as a fundamental right and a sacred boundary that should not be crossed.
By sharing stories that reflect these values, parents can teach children that privacy is not a form of withdrawal, it is an expression of dignity. Each story becomes a mirror of faith, showing that those who protect their boundaries are honoured servants of Allah Almighty, confident and respected in both worlds.
