Parenting Perspective
Children learn far more about modesty from what they observe than from what they are told. When parents embody modesty with grace rather than guilt, children begin to associate it with confidence, calmness, and self-respect. However, when modesty is shown with tension, strictness, or embarrassment, children can confuse it with shame. The goal is to model modesty so naturally that it becomes part of your home’s atmosphere: gentle, beautiful, and rooted in faith.
Let Modesty Flow Through Daily Actions
Start with small, visible habits such as dressing with care, covering appropriately even when at home, and speaking respectfully. When these actions are performed quietly and consistently, children absorb them without resistance. You can say, ‘We dress this way because Allah Almighty loves dignity and grace’. This approach ties behaviour to love, not fear.
Keep Your Tone Calm and Confident
Avoid using anxious reminders or harsh instructions. Instead of saying, ‘Go and cover yourself, that is not proper’, you could try, ‘Let us dress in a way that shows respect for ourselves’. A confident tone demonstrates that modesty is a normal and positive practice, not something awkward or forced. This prevents feelings of shame.
Balance Guidance With Openness
When questions about clothing or modesty arise, answer them kindly and honestly. Avoid exaggerated warnings or using emotional guilt to make your point. Show your child that modesty is a thoughtful choice, not a punishment. Listening to their perspective first builds trust and prevents rebellion later on.
Reflect Modesty Beyond Clothing
Demonstrate modesty in your words, your mannerisms, and your general attitude. Children learn that true haya (modesty) also includes humility, kindness, and self-control. When they see modesty as a part of a person’s character, not just their clothing, they internalise it as a form of strength, not restriction.
By modelling modesty through ease, grace, and love, you nurture children who will wear their values with quiet confidence, not hesitation.
Spiritual Insight
Islam defines modesty as a reflection of faith, a quality that beautifies both the heart and one’s appearance. Parents who live this balance teach by their example that modesty is an expression of self-worth, not shame.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 63:
‘And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.’
This verse highlights that grace and humility are signs of true believers. Modesty, too, should feel easy and natural, a part of a gentle strength of character.
It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 5004, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Modesty is a branch of faith.’
This Hadith shows that modesty is not about covering oneself out of shame but about expressing faith in every action and aspect of one’s life.
By practising modesty with calm confidence, parents show their children that it is not a symbol of fear but of faith. When children see modesty as a light, not a burden, they inherit a balanced sense of identity, one where their dignity shines through quiet actions that honour both themselves and Allah Almighty.
