What helps children see their changing bodies as beautiful, not strange?

Parenting Perspective

As puberty begins, children often struggle to recognise their changing bodies as part of something beautiful. They may feel awkward, compare themselves to others, or even wish the process would stop. Parents can help them see these changes as a reflection of Allah Almighty’s artistry, not something strange, but something sacred. Beauty, when framed through gratitude and confidence, becomes a spiritual perspective rather than a superficial one.

Start With Awe, Not Anxiety

When your child expresses discomfort about their changing body, respond with wonder rather than worry. Say, ‘SubhanAllah, your body is doing exactly what it was created to do.’ Such words replace fear with appreciation. Let them know that every person’s growth looks different and that these changes are signs of health and divine precision, not mistakes.

Use Positive and Respectful Language

Avoid terms like “weird,” “awkward,” or “funny” when describing changes. Use affirming words such as “strong,” “unique,” or “beautiful.” If your child complains about their skin, height, or shape, remind them gently: ‘Allah Almighty designed you perfectly for who you are meant to become.’ Words that celebrate rather than correct nurture lasting self-esteem.

Highlight Function Over Form

Teach that beauty lies in purpose. The body allows us to pray, move, hug, help, and learn, every part has meaning. By shifting the focus from “how it looks” to “what it allows,” you ground beauty in gratitude. Encourage your child to take care of their body through cleanliness, sleep, and healthy food as a way of honouring Allah Almighty’s gift.

Reflect Beauty Through Daily Gratitude

Invite your child to notice small blessings in their body each day, clear eyesight, strong legs, a healthy heart. Linking self-awareness with thankfulness helps them view growth as something to celebrate, not criticise.

When children see their bodies through gratitude, they begin to understand beauty as divine, not worldly.

Spiritual Insight

Islam defines beauty not in shape or size, but in balance, purpose, and character. Teaching children that Allah Almighty designed every body with wisdom helps them view their changing form as part of spiritual growth.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tin (95), Verse 4:

‘Indeed, We created man in the best of stature.’

This verse establishes that every human form is noble by creation. It reminds children that their growing bodies, even when unfamiliar, are shaped in perfection by Allah Almighty’s will.

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 611, that the holy Prophet Muhammad said:

‘Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.’

This Hadith shows that appreciating beauty, both within and around us, is an act of faith. Parents can explain that loving one’s body is not vanity, but gratitude, recognising the beauty Allah Almighty placed within every stage of growth.

By guiding children to see their changing bodies as signs of divine beauty and function, you help them replace confusion with confidence. They learn that their form, in every transition, reflects Allah Almighty’s mercy, beautiful, purposeful, and perfectly designed for the journey ahead.
