Parenting Perspective
When children begin to notice the changes of puberty, their initial reactions are often confusion or self-consciousness. They may feel that shifts in their height, skin, or emotions are random or even unfair. Parents can play a vital role in showing them that these changes are purposeful and part of Allah Almighty’s perfect design. This shift in perspective can transform anxiety into gratitude.
Frame Growth as Normal and Purposeful
The first step is to normalise the experience of growing up. Use calm and reassuring words, such as, ‘Your body is changing because it is preparing you for the future’. This language frames development as positive preparation rather than a disruption. Reminding your child that everyone goes through this process helps them see it as a natural and universal stage of life.
Connect Physical Changes with Gratitude
Encourage your child to recognise the blessings within these changes. For example, when discussing their increasing height or strength, you can highlight how these traits allow them to participate more fully in family life, learning, or worship. Linking physical change to newfound capabilities nurtures gratitude instead of frustration.
Share Reflections from the Natural World
Draw on examples from nature to illustrate purpose and design. You could talk about a seed transforming into a tree or a caterpillar into a butterfly. Such comparisons make Allah Almighty’s plan visible in the world around them, reinforcing that their own growth is guided by the same wisdom.
Guide Them Towards Spiritual Responsibility
Remind your child that these bodily changes coincide with their readiness to take on more responsibility in their character and worship. This helps them see that growing up is an opportunity to step into dignity, not just an awkward phase to be endured. By linking physical maturity to spiritual growth, the entire process becomes more meaningful.
By blending these ideas, you can help your child connect their personal growth to Allah Almighty’s divine plan, making the journey of puberty less frightening and more empowering.
Spiritual Insight
Islam emphasises that nothing occurs outside of Allah Almighty’s divine decree. Teaching children to view puberty as part of this plan nurtures trust and patience. Rather than fearing change, they learn to embrace it as an honoured stage of life, designed by their Creator.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mulk (67), Verse 14:
‘Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?’
This verse is a powerful reminder that Allah Almighty, who created every detail of the human body, has perfect knowledge of how and when growth unfolds. Every change a child experiences is therefore designed with precision and wisdom.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 66, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.’
This Hadith encourages a mindset of seeing blessings in what Allah has given. Parents can use this teaching to help a child reframe their perspective: just as you would wish the blessing of healthy growth for a friend, learn to see it as a blessing for yourself. This fosters appreciation for the changes Allah has planned for them.
When parents frame puberty as a reflection of divine wisdom, children begin to see their developing bodies as part of Allah Almighty’s beautiful and purposeful plan. With gratitude and faith, they can face this new stage not with worry, but with confidence and dignity.
