Parenting Perspective
When a child faces developmental challenges, parents often feel a tension between relying on professional guidance and turning to Allah Almighty for support. You may worry about whether seeking external help implies a lack of faith. Understanding that both approaches complement each other can bring profound peace and clarity. Professionals provide practical tools, assessment, and structured guidance, whilst dua (supplication) nurtures spiritual resilience, patience, and trust in Allah Almighty’s plan.
Balance Action with Faith
Accept that seeking professional help is not a contradiction to spiritual reliance; it is an act of responsible effort. Arranging an appointment with a paediatrician, occupational therapist, or physiotherapist allows your child to access specialised care and strategies suited to their needs.
- Combine Effort and Prayer: Combining consistent action with heartfelt dua reinforces the understanding that effort and supplication work hand in hand.
- Parent script: ‘We will try these exercises together and ask Allah Almighty to make them easy for us.’ Children learn by observing how parents integrate faith with practical solutions.
Incorporate Dua into Daily Routines
Making dua is simple, yet powerful when done consistently. Teach your child short prayers for ease, confidence, and perseverance in learning new skills.
- Daily Reliance: Even quiet, personal moments of dua during meals, bedtime, or daily activities can instil a sense of reliance on Allah Almighty.
- Parent script: ‘Let us ask Allah Almighty together to make this practice easy and help us grow stronger each day.’
This practice provides emotional reassurance and creates a spiritual framework that supports persistence and optimism.
Integrate Practical Guidance and Spiritual Reflection
As you follow professional advice, maintain reflection on the broader purpose of growth and development.
- Stewardship: Discuss with your child how learning new skills, practising, and seeking guidance are forms of stewardship of the abilities Allah Almighty has entrusted to them.
- Reframing Challenges: By framing therapy and exercises as opportunities to care for these gifts, children perceive challenges as meaningful rather than burdensome.
Spiritual Insight
Islam encourages combining sincere effort with trust in Allah Almighty. Seeking help and making dua are both forms of reliance, reflecting an understanding that human effort and divine facilitation are intertwined.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verses 159:
‘So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] or harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him…’
This verse demonstrates that consultation, planning, and action should accompany reliance on Allah Almighty. Seeking professional advice is an extension of this principle. By taking considered steps and then trusting in Allah Almighty, parents model balanced, responsible decision-making for their children.
It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 606, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make dua and do not despair, for Allah Almighty loves those who call upon Him with sincerity.’
Through heartfelt supplication and practical effort, parents engage in a holistic approach to their child’s development. Children learn to value both persistence and prayer, understanding that Allah Almighty is the ultimate source of support whilst professional guidance equips them with tangible skills and confidence.
