Parenting Perspective
At some point, every child, especially as they grow into adolescence, may encounter unwanted comments, teasing, or inappropriate attention concerning their appearance, behaviour, or beliefs. Whether this occurs in school, online, or in public, such experiences can leave them feeling confused, angry, or deeply embarrassed. Your role as a parent is not only to protect them but also to equip them to help them respond with confidence, dignity, and a wisdom that is firmly rooted in faith.
Preparing your child to deal with inappropriate attention wisely means teaching three core things: self respect, emotional composure, and spiritual awareness. You want them to correctly recognise their inherent worth, stay calm under pressure, and respond in ways that uphold both their personal boundaries and their moral values.
Begin With Emotional Grounding
The fundamental first lesson is emotional self control. Explain to your child that not everyone who comments or stares deserves their precious energy or their reaction. Say, ‘When someone says something inappropriate, they are actually showing their own weakness, not challenging your true worth. You do not need to match their poor behaviour you must rise above it.’
- Help them fully understand that composure is power. Responding with immediate anger or tears unfortunately gives control to the offender, but calm dignity actively disarms them.
- Encourage your child to pause, take a deep breath, walk away from the situation if possible, or reply firmly but respectfully when necessary.
Teach the Language of Boundaries
Equip your child with confident, polite, and clear phrases they can readily use to assert themselves. For example:
- ‘Please do not speak to me that way.’
- ‘That is not appropriate.’
- ‘I am not comfortable with this conversation.’
Practise these lines together so that using them feels natural and comfortable. Reinforce the essential truth that setting strong boundaries is not rudeness it is profound self respect. Teach them that they do not owe anyone their attention, laughter, or silence in response to clear wrongdoing. Explain that ignoring some comments is also a powerful form of strength. Not every provocation genuinely deserves a reply, but every situation demands self control.
Discuss Safety and Support
Be completely honest about the specific situations where it is absolutely vital to seek help. Tell your child that if someone’s behaviour crosses a dangerous line whether online, at school, or elsewhere they should inform you or a trusted adult immediately. Reassure them repeatedly that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but an act of wisdom.
- Encourage open communication at home. Say, ‘If something makes you feel uneasy or unsafe, tell me right away. I will never be upset with you for being honest and open.’
- When children trust they will be heard without blame or interrogation, they are significantly more likely to reach out for guidance and support.
Strengthen Identity and Self Worth
Teach your child the fundamental principle that they are not defined by the words or hostile opinions of others. Their real worth comes solely from their character and their standing before Allah Almighty. You might say, ‘When you know truly who you are and Who you belong to, no one’s hurtful comment can ever shake your inner peace or confidence.’
- Use powerful real life examples of composed responses: how holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ endured public mockery with immense patience and grace, effectively turning insult into spiritual strength.
- When children feel securely grounded in their faith, inappropriate attention no longer feels like a personal attack it becomes a test they can calmly overcome with dignity.
Model Composed Reactions Yourself
Children learn their behavioural cues mostly from observation. If they observe you responding to rudeness with calm restraint and assertive grace, they will naturally mirror that behaviour. Avoid gossiping about others or retaliating harshly when wronged; instead, demonstrate how true dignity can coexist perfectly with firmness and clear communication. When they observe that silence can be strength and that words must be used wisely, they will learn to choose their responses deliberately, rather than emotionally.
Spiritual Insight
The noble Quran and the teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offer powerful, comprehensive examples of responding to harm with wisdom and self respect. They clearly teach that believers are neither passively weak nor aggressively hostile they are consistently dignified. The spiritual ability to remain calm, speak the truth, and uphold personal purity even when provoked is a clear sign of deep, mature faith.
Responding to Ignorance with Peace
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 63:
‘And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace…’
This profound verse truly captures the spiritual essence of wise restraint. Teach your child that silence or calm, measured words in the face of ignorance do not indicate weakness. Rather, they deeply reflect strength of spirit the ability to protect one’s own dignity without ever stooping to the low level of those who seek to provoke.
- Explain that Allah Almighty highly praises those who rise above personal insult and indecency with grace.
- Each time your child responds to provocation with spiritual wisdom instead of instinctive anger, they earn divine reward for embodying mercy and patience.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6114, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong person is not the one who can overpower others, but the one who controls himself when angry.’
This Hadith completely redefines strength as inner mastery, never outward dominance. Remind your child that in challenging moments of provocation, real courage lies in emotional composure. When they consciously choose calmness over confrontation, they perfectly reflect the prophetic example of dignity in adversity.
- Encourage them to sincerely make dua for those who act wrongly, for this profound act transforms personal pain into compassion. Responding with grace consistently shields the heart from bitterness and keeps one’s faith securely intact.
Help your child see every inappropriate comment or unwanted glance as a precise moment to rise to visibly show the strength of their faith and the elegance of their manners. Empower them with the unshakeable knowledge that while they cannot control the behaviour of others, they can always control their own response. Reinforce that Allah Almighty witnesses every act of patience, every moment of genuine restraint, and every quiet refusal to compromise their dignity. Each response firmly grounded in wisdom becomes a sincere act of worship.
When children learn that dignity is a form of spiritual strength, they stop seeing themselves as passive victims of unwanted attention and start seeing themselves as active guardians of self respect. They will learn to stand tall, speak calmly, and constantly remember that their true, lasting worth is defined not by the fleeting gaze of others, but by the eternal gaze of Allah Almighty the One who honours those who remain pure, patient, and principled in a world that often sadly forgets how to be.
