How do I teach my child to manage attraction in a respectful and faith driven way?

Parenting Perspective

As children transition into adolescence, feelings of attraction are a natural and inevitable part of their growth; they signal that their emotions and self awareness are profoundly developing. However, without proper guidance, natural curiosity can easily turn into deep confusion, unnecessary guilt, or destructive indulgence. Islam consciously recognises attraction as a normal human experience but clearly teaches haya (modesty) and taqwa (God consciousness) as the essential keys to managing and channelling it. Your primary goal as a parent is never to suppress these natural feelings, but to actively help your child understand and channel them in ways that consistently honour both their personal dignity and their most sacred relationship with Allah Almighty.

Beginning with Openness and Trust

Many young people struggle with these new feelings in debilitating silence because they intensely fear being judged or misunderstood. You must actively create an atmosphere where sincere questions about relationships and attraction can be calmly and respectfully discussed without reservation. You might say, ‘Feeling drawn to someone is completely normal; it is a fundamental part of how Allah Almighty created us. What truly matters is how we wisely choose to handle those strong feelings.’

If your child feels secure and safe to share their thoughts, you can guide them effectively before potentially harmful external voices or influences do. You must consistently avoid shaming language, which often leads to harmful secrecy. Instead, powerfully reinforce the idea that personal self control and spiritual awareness actively protect the purity of both their heart and their soul.

Explaining the Purpose Behind Feelings

Teach your child clearly that the feeling of attraction itself is never sinful; it only becomes spiritually harmful when it directly leads to actions or thoughts that actively displease Allah Almighty. Say, ‘Allah gave you these new feelings so you could eventually understand compassion, connection, and responsibility never to misuse or exploit them.’

Help them truly understand that these powerful emotions are fundamentally spiritual tests meant to strengthen their personal self discipline. Just as hunger teaches gratitude and restraint through fasting, attraction teaches modesty and respect through patience and control. When they begin to see attraction as a healthy spiritual exercise rather than a deeply forbidden topic, they will naturally approach it with maturity and reverence.

Teach Practical Self Management

Guide your child toward implementing practical daily habits that help them successfully manage their impulses and their thoughts respectfully. Encourage them consistently to lower their gaze, intentionally limit exposure to inappropriate media, and consciously avoid private or intimate conversations that unnecessarily stir up strong feelings.

If they genuinely struggle, suggest positive, natural coping actions: taking wudu (ablution), stepping outside for fresh air, engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah Almighty), or immediately focusing on a productive task. Say, ‘When you consciously shift your focus toward something beneficial, Allah Almighty immediately blesses you with greater strength and clarity.’

Explain clearly that these moments of spiritual effort are not about denial or emotional suppression, but about conscious redirection: consistently choosing what sincerely nourishes their soul instead of what spiritually weakens it.

Emphasising Modesty and Respect for Others

Remind your child firmly that feelings of attraction must always be viewed through the essential lens of respect. A truly respectful person never objectifies, harasses, or mocks the feelings or dignity of others. Teach them, ‘Modesty protects not only your own heart and dignity, but also the inherent dignity of everyone else around you.’

Discuss openly how lowering the gaze, choosing to dress appropriately and humbly, and actively maintaining polite, firm boundaries are all sincere acts of honour, never personal restriction. Tell them with conviction that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught clearly that looking away from temptation is a clear sign of deep inner nobility and spiritual control an act specifically recorded and rewarded by Allah Almighty Himself.

Linking Control to Reward and Honour

Consistently remind your child that every single moment of sincere self restraint earns immense divine reward. Say, ‘Every time you consciously choose what pleases Allah Almighty instead of immediately following what your temporary emotions demand, you grow spiritually stronger.’

Explain clearly that Allah Almighty sees all their quiet, internal struggles and rewards them immensely for each moment they diligently guard their heart. End this discussion with hope: ‘These natural feelings will one day find their rightful and blessed place in the sacred bond of marriage, which is a mercy from Allah Almighty. Until that time, patience and self control are your greatest spiritual strengths.’

Spiritual Insight

Islam’s comprehensive approach to managing attraction is one of absolute balance: it openly acknowledges natural human desires but wisely guides them with unwavering moral clarity and spiritual discipline. The noble Quran and the Sunnah consistently remind all believers that the purity of the heart reliably leads to profound peace, while passively surrendering to unchecked impulses always ultimately brings spiritual regret.

Guarding the Heart as a Form of Worship

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30 to 31:

‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah Almighty is acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts…‘

These two verses make it unequivocally clear that self restraint is not gendered; it is an equally shared, fundamental act of devotion. Explain sincerely to your child that consciously lowering the gaze and faithfully guarding the heart are high acts of worship, never of shame. They actively purify the soul and spiritually protect the believer from unnecessary emotional and spiritual harm.

Tell them, ‘When you consciously protect your eyes and your thoughts, you are sincerely showing Allah Almighty that you value His sacred trust more than any temporary desires.’ This transforms the necessary act of control into a form of dedicated love for Allah Almighty.

Strength in Resisting Temptation

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 658, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Seven are (the people) whom Allah Almighty will shade on the Day when there is no shade but His… one of them is a man who was invited by a woman of beauty and position, but he said: ‘I fear Allah Almighty.’‘

This Hadith powerfully highlights the spiritual power and the immense honour of restraint. It teaches clearly that saying no to temptation, solely for the sake of Allah Almighty, is an act of deep, undeniable courage, and it is rewarded with eternal divine protection. Share this openly with your child to inspire quiet, immense pride in their hard won moral strength.

Remind them constantly that attraction is never to be feared but must be responsibly guided by taqwa; for every person who successfully resists temptation solely for Allah Almighty’s sake earns His eternal shade and boundless love.

When your child truly learns that attraction is an intrinsic part of being human but must be consciously managed with constant awareness of Allah Almighty, they naturally begin to treat their turbulent emotions with wisdom rather than deep shame.

Through your calm, consistent teaching, they will clearly discover that honour resides not in actively suppressing or hiding their feelings but in actively and successfully mastering them. They will come to understand that essential self control, deep modesty, and sincere respect are never signs of weakness but are reliable reflections of true strength, inner purity, and spiritual maturity.

In time, your child will sincerely come to see that true, lasting beauty lies not in chasing every fleeting desire, but in faithfully guarding the heart; for the one who successfully conquers internal temptation for Allah Almighty’s sake achieves a spiritual victory far more noble and enduring than any worldly triumph or success.
