Parenting Perspective
As children transition into adolescence, hormonal changes inevitably introduce significant emotional turbulence: unexpected mood swings, increased irritability, physical fatigue, and sometimes deep moments of social withdrawal. These internal changes are completely natural but can regrettably leave both parents and the children themselves feeling confused, frustrated, or misunderstood. Islam teaches us clearly that every stage of life comes with its own unique tests and profound blessings. Guiding your child through this sensitive, fluctuating period with sincere empathy, unwavering patience, and spiritual grounding helps them successfully navigate rapid change with dignity and firm faith.
Beginning with Understanding, Not Reaction
When your child suddenly becomes moody or short tempered, it is vital to remember that their intense emotions are not personal attacks against you; they are often natural physical responses to intense hormonal shifts occurring internally. Reacting with immediate anger or harsh criticism will only make them feel deep guilt or severely misunderstood. Instead, you must consistently approach them with calmness and quiet composure. You might say, ‘I can clearly see that you are feeling upset right now. Would you like to talk about it with me, or do you genuinely need some quiet space to yourself?‘
By consciously acknowledging their feelings rather than dismissing them entirely, you effectively model proper emotional regulation. Your composed response becomes a reliable mirror that sincerely teaches them self control through patience and essential understanding.
Teaching Them to Recognise Their Emotions
Help your child proactively label what they feel: frustration, deep sadness, anxiety, or acute embarrassment. Say, ‘You seem restless and easily irritated today; do you think you are just tired, or do you simply need some quiet time to calm down?‘ This critical practice successfully turns confusing, chaotic emotions into manageable, constructive experiences.
Encourage safe avenues like journaling or private reflection. Explain openly that understanding their volatile emotions is an integral part of tazkiyah (purification of the soul), which is a lifelong process of self awareness and profound spiritual growth. When your child learns to accurately identify their turbulent emotions, they also effectively learn how to respond wisely rather than simply reacting impulsively.
Maintain a Calm and Consistent Routine
Structure reliably brings essential stability when emotions violently fluctuate. Strongly encourage them to maintain balanced, nutritious meals, get adequate, restorative sleep, diligently perform their daily prayer (salah), and engage in moderate physical activity. The consistent routine of salah effectively grounds the heart and mind; regular suhoor like meals and proper hydration physically calm the body.
Say clearly, ‘When your body and heart are calm and cared for, your thoughts naturally become clear and composed.’ These intentional habits gently teach them that effective self care is itself a direct act of gratitude to Allah Almighty, who thoughtfully created the human body in perfect wisdom.
Foster Emotional Connection and Safe Dialogue
Adolescents urgently require a secure, non judgemental place to safely express their intense emotions without fear of criticism. Make it absolutely clear that they can speak freely to you, even about deep discomfort, confusion, or anger. You might say, ‘You can always, always tell me how you sincerely feel. Emotions do not make you a bad person; they simply make you human.’
Avoid permanently labelling their fluctuating moods as mere ‘overreactions.’ Instead, gently remind them that all difficult feelings are temporary, and that patience (sabr) helps them to pass gracefully and without causing unnecessary harm. Listening more than speaking helps your child feel truly heard and validated, which significantly reduces deep frustration and defensive behaviour.
Encourage Faith as an Anchor During Change
Hormonal and rapid emotional shifts can frequently cause deep uncertainty, even impacting their self image and overall confidence. Reassure your child constantly that these physical and emotional changes are an intentional, beautiful part of Allah Almighty’s design. Say, ‘Your body is growing exactly as Allah Almighty planned for it. Every single change has a specific purpose.’
Encourage consistent prayer and reflection, not solely as a strict obligation, but as a reliable source of profound inner peace. Du’a, dhikr (remembrance of Allah Almighty), and Qur’an recitation spiritually soothe the mind and gently settle the turbulent heart. Teach them with conviction that securely connecting with Allah Almighty through sincere prayer brings necessary calm when the world inside them feels severely unsettled.
End your daily interactions with final reassurance: ‘Even when you feel completely unsure of yourself, Allah Almighty understands you perfectly and completely.’
Spiritual Insight
The noble Quran and the Sunnah consistently remind us that change whether it is physical, emotional, or spiritual is an intrinsic part of human growth and maturity. Patience, understanding, and consistent remembrance of Allah Almighty actively help the sincere believer turn confusion into strength and internal imbalance into harmony.
Patience as a Path to Maturity
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 153:
‘O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah Almighty is with the patient…‘
This verse directly teaches us that patience (sabr) is never passive waiting; it is an active, profound expression of faith. When your child learns to purposefully pause, breathe deeply, and consciously turn to prayer during moments of intense agitation, they are simultaneously practising both deep emotional and spiritual strength.
Remind your child that patience is not about suppressing their genuine feelings, but about holding them with grace until inner peace reliably returns. Every single act of restraint they demonstrate earns the companionship of Allah Almighty, who promises His constant presence to those who steadfastly endure.
Gentle Approach to Emotional Struggle
It is recorded in Al Adab Al Mufrad, Hadith 1317, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong person is not the one who can overpower others, but the one who controls himself when angry.‘
This Hadith perfectly reflects true emotional balance: that genuine strength lies in quiet composure, never in explosive reaction. Share it openly with your child to constantly remind them that even intense moments of frustration are invaluable opportunities to build inner strength and profound self mastery.
When they consciously control their anger, breathe through acute stress, or choose kindness over simple irritation, they are actively practising the very kind of strength that deeply pleases Allah Almighty.
When your child truly realises that emotional fluctuation is an inherent part of growing into maturity, they immediately begin to treat themselves with necessary patience and self compassion. Through your unshakeable calm presence, they learn clearly that faith does not entirely erase life’s struggles; it powerfully transforms it.
Your sincere empathy and constant steadiness become their reliable model of composure, clearly showing them that their intense feelings are not spiritual enemies, but wise teachers sent by Allah Almighty to sincerely refine their hearts and moral character.
In time, they will deeply learn to navigate their emotions with grace: understanding that patience is strength, that prayer is comfort, and that the One who created their rapidly changing body also cares tenderly and completely for their constantly changing heart.
