Parenting Perspective
Hearing that your daughter has been mocked or questioned about her hijab can stir deep emotions; sadness, anger, or even helplessness. Yet, these moments, though painful, can also become powerful opportunities for growth and guidance. Your daughter does not only need to know what to say, but how to stand firm with dignity, peace, and confidence. Teaching her to respond wisely is about strengthening both her emotional resilience and her spiritual clarity.
Validate Her Feelings First
Before offering advice, you must start with empathy. If she tells you someone teased her, resist the urge to immediately’fix’the situation. Instead, acknowledge her emotions:’That must have been really hurtful.’Let her feel heard. This builds trust and reassures her that feeling upset or confused does not make her weak; it makes her human. Only when she feels understood will she be ready to learn how to respond.
Teach the Power of Composure
Explain that a wise response begins with calmness, not retaliation. When she reacts with anger, she gives others control over her emotions; when she responds with grace, she keeps her strength. Teach her to pause, breathe, and think before speaking. You can even practise short role plays at home:
You:’What would you say if someone said your hijab is strange?’
Her:’I might say, ‘It is part of who I am, and it helps me feel close to Allah Almighty.’’
This kind of rehearsal builds confidence and prevents panic when she faces real life situations.
Explain the Deeper Meaning of the Hijab
Help her understand that the hijab is not merely fabric; it is a symbol of faith, identity, and dignity. Share with her that wearing it is an act of courage and devotion in a world where modesty is often misunderstood. When she internalises this meaning, mockery will no longer shake her, because she knows she wears it for the One who matters most.
Encourage her to express that sense of purpose calmly if questioned:’I wear it because it reminds me to be kind, strong, and conscious of Allah Almighty.’When her words come from conviction, they will carry quiet power.
Build Her Support Network
Remind her that she is not alone. Encourage friendships with other girls who also wear hijab and share similar values. Support from like minded peers helps her feel proud rather than isolated. If possible, connect her with community activities or youth groups where hijab is seen as honour rather than oddity. Belonging to such spaces strengthens identity and makes it easier to face the outside world confidently.
Teach Her That Dignity Speaks Louder Than Defensiveness
If mockery persists, guide her to maintain dignity rather than defensiveness. She does not need to argue or prove her worth. A calm smile, a respectful response, or even silence in certain moments can speak volumes. Explain that Allah Almighty sees her patience, and every time she responds with grace, she earns reward and self respect.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond courage and communication lies the spiritual strength that comes from knowing one’s purpose. The noble Quran and the teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that enduring mockery for faith is not a burden, but a badge of honour. Those who remain steadfast in modesty are walking a path that the righteous have walked before.
Honour in Standing Firm
The worth of a believer is fixed by their devotion to the Creator, remaining immune to external mockery.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzab (33), Verse 35:
‘Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women… and the men and women who remember Allah Almighty often for them Allah Almighty has prepared forgiveness and a great reward…‘
This verse affirms that the value of a believer is not determined by the opinion of people but by the closeness to Allah Almighty. Teach your daughter that every time she chooses modesty for His sake, she earns a place among those honoured by Him. Mockery may sting for a moment, but the reward for patience and faith is eternal. Her hijab becomes a visible reminder that she walks in the company of the faithful.
The Dignity of Calm Response in the Sunnah
The highest form of strength is achieved through self control and emotional restraint, especially when facing provocation.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2609, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong person is not the one who overcomes others by force, but the one who controls himself while in anger.‘
This Hadith teaches that real strength lies in restraint. When your daughter remains composed while others mock her, she is not being passive; she is embodying prophetic strength. By controlling her emotions and choosing words of wisdom, she mirrors the character of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who faced mockery with patience and grace. Remind her that responding with kindness or silence does not make her weak. It makes her dignified, as she chooses to rise above negativity with calm faith. This self control transforms potential pain into a form of worship; a silent declaration that her self worth is anchored in Allah Almighty, not public approval.
When you guide your daughter with empathy, confidence, and faith, you teach her that the hijab is more than a garment; it is a statement of serenity and strength.
