How can I help my child replace infatuation with meaningful connection to Allah Almighty?

Parenting Perspective

Infatuation often begins as admiration but quickly turns into emotional dependence; a rush of feeling that distracts the heart and clouds clarity. For a young person, it can feel consuming: the constant thoughts, emotional highs and lows, and the sense of needing someone to feel whole. But Islam teaches that the heart finds its truest fulfilment only in the remembrance of Allah Almighty. Helping your child replace infatuation with meaningful connection to Him is not about suppressing their emotions, but about guiding them to redirect love toward the One who never disappoints.

Acknowledge Their Feelings Without Judging

Begin by listening with gentleness. If your child speaks of someone they admire or cannot stop thinking about, do not mock or dismiss their emotions. Say, ‘It is natural to feel drawn to someone; Allah Almighty created our hearts with the ability to love. But love becomes beautiful only when it is guided by faith.’ Validating their feelings opens the door for understanding; judgment closes it. You are not teaching them to deny emotion, but to elevate it.

Explain the Nature of Infatuation

Help your child understand that infatuation often confuses attraction with affection. It is temporary, exciting, and self centred; more about how the other person makes them feel than who the other person truly is. You can say, ‘Infatuation is like a spark; it looks bright but fades quickly. Real love, especially love rooted in faith, is like light; steady, calm, and lasting.’ This distinction helps them realise that the heart’s energy must be guided, not wasted.

Redirect Emotional Energy Toward Worship

Encourage your child to channel emotional intensity into devotion. Suggest, ‘When you miss someone, make dua for them and then pray for your own heart to stay pure.’ Tell them that the more they connect with Allah Almighty through salah, dhikr, and reflection, the more control they gain over their feelings. Love, when redirected toward Allah Almighty, becomes a source of spiritual power rather than confusion.

Teach That True Fulfilment Comes from Divine Nearness

Ask your child to reflect: ‘Who comforts your heart when you are alone?’ or “Whose love never fades when others change?” Teach them that the only love that completely satisfies the soul is Allah Almighty’s. When they feel restless in longing, remind them, ‘The ache you feel is your heart asking for deeper meaning; only Allah Almighty can fill it.’ Once they learn to find peace in prayer and remembrance, worldly attachments begin to loosen naturally.

Model Devotion Through Your Own Example

Let your child witness how faith brings tranquillity to your own life. Share how tawakkul (trust in Allah Almighty) helps you let go of what you cannot control. When they see you turn to Allah Almighty for comfort rather than people for validation, they learn by imitation that spiritual love is more empowering than emotional dependency.

Spiritual Insight

The noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind believers that the human heart was created for divine love. Every longing, every attachment, and every emotional pull is ultimately a call back to Allah Almighty. Infatuation drains the heart because it seeks completion from creation, not the Creator. When that love is redirected, the same emotion becomes worship.

Peace Found Only in the Remembrance of Allah Almighty

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar Ra‘d (13), Verse 28:

‘Those who believe and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance of Allah Almighty. Verily, in the remembrance of Allah Almighty do hearts find peace…‘

This verse captures the secret to replacing infatuation with faith: peace is not found in longing for people but in remembering Allah Almighty. Teach your child that the same heart that feels consumed by someone can feel calm and complete when filled with dhikr and gratitude. Infatuation fades; divine connection fulfills.

Teaching on True Love

It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 5125, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘When a man loves his brother, let him tell him that he loves him for the sake of Allah Almighty.‘

This Hadith teaches that love becomes sacred when directed toward goodness and for the sake of Allah Almighty. Encourage your child to love people for their faith, kindness, and sincerity; not for superficial qualities or emotional excitement. Love guided by Allah’s purpose uplifts the heart instead of overwhelming it.

When your child begins to shift from craving attention to seeking closeness with Allah Almighty, their emotions will transform from turmoil into tranquillity. Encourage them to replace longing with remembrance; to turn thoughts of people into prayers, and feelings of emptiness into moments of dua.

You might say, ‘The love you feel is not wrong; it is a reminder that your heart is alive. But the One who made your heart deserves its first place.’

Over time, they will realise that love is not about possession but about purification; a journey that leads the heart away from fleeting infatuation and toward eternal connection. And when that love is anchored in Allah Almighty, it will illuminate every other relationship with sincerity, peace, and purpose.
