What helps my child see that lowering the gaze protects emotional peace?

Parenting Perspective

In today’s world, children are surrounded by screens and images that constantly appeal to their eyes and emotions. Social media, entertainment, and even casual online interactions make it difficult for them to understand why Islam places such emphasis on lowering the gaze. Many children may think this command is about restriction or shame, when in truth it is about inner peace and dignity. Helping your child understand this concept requires both emotional clarity and spiritual grounding.

Begin with the Psychology of the Gaze

Explain to your child that what we look at repeatedly shapes our thoughts, feelings, and desires. When the eyes are unguarded, the mind becomes restless and the heart unsettled. Encourage them to notice how certain images or content make them feel; perhaps envious, distracted, or emotionally drained. Tell them that Allah Almighty, in His wisdom, asks us to guard our gaze not to suppress our feelings but to protect our peace.

You can say, ‘When we look too long at what tempts us, we lose focus and inner calm. Lowering the gaze helps us control what enters our heart.’ This helps your child realise that the rule is not about denial but about self respect and emotional freedom.

Help Them See the Power of Self Control

Use relatable examples to illustrate the strength in restraint. When your child resists watching something inappropriate or turns away from curiosity, praise their effort. Say, ‘You just showed great strength; that is what true confidence looks like.’ Reinforce that real maturity is not in indulging every impulse, but in mastering it. Over time, they will begin associating modesty with power, not restriction.

Create a Home Culture of Modesty

Children mirror what they see at home. Be mindful of the shows you watch, the way you speak about appearance, and the online content you consume. Model modesty through action: lowering your gaze, dressing respectfully, and speaking about people’s character rather than looks. When children see that you also strive to control what you look at, they will understand that this command applies to everyone, not only to them.

Encourage Reflection on Inner Peace

Guide your child to connect their emotional calm to what they allow into their eyes and mind. Ask them to reflect: ‘Do I feel closer to Allah Almighty after what I have seen, or further away?’ Encourage moments of quiet after prayer or before sleep, where they reflect on what they have absorbed during the day. Gradually, they will link modesty with mental clarity and spiritual serenity.

When they learn that lowering the gaze is an act of self care that preserves the purity of their heart, it stops feeling like a rule and becomes a source of relief.

Spiritual Insight

Beyond its moral importance, lowering the gaze is an act of protection; a way to preserve the heart from emotional chaos. The noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ remind us that peace of mind begins with purity of sight. What enters through the eyes settles in the heart, and the one who guards their gaze guards their soul.

The Gaze as a Mirror of the Heart

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verses 30–31:

‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is All Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts…‘

These verses make it clear that lowering the gaze is not about repression but about purification. The phrase ‘that is purer for them‘ reveals the wisdom behind the command; purity brings peace. When the gaze is uncontrolled, it invites comparison, longing, and dissatisfaction. But when the eyes are disciplined, the heart finds stillness. Teaching this verse to your child helps them see that Allah Almighty’s commands are gifts that preserve emotional balance and protect them from unnecessary pain.

The Eyes as Gateways to the Soul

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2624, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Iblis. Whoever lowers his gaze for the sake of Allah, He will grant him the sweetness of faith which he will find in his heart.‘

This Hadith shows that every time a person resists looking at something that displeases Allah Almighty, they are rewarded not just with spiritual merit, but with an inner sweetness; a calmness that only faith can bring. Teach your child that each act of restraint is a victory of the heart over the ego, a quiet triumph that strengthens their connection with their Creator.

When children understand that lowering the gaze is not about control by others but control of oneself, they begin to embrace it with pride. They see that Allah Almighty’s guidance is not meant to suppress joy but to protect the heart from turmoil. By linking modesty with emotional strength, you help them find dignity in obedience and peace in restraint.

Encourage your child to see the moments they turn away as opportunities to grow in sincerity. Every time they protect their eyes, they protect their peace. Every time they choose purity over impulse, they feel the light of faith settle in their heart.
