Parenting Perspective
Video calls are now an inherent, everyday part of professional life, friendships, and educational requirements. Yet, for families committed to modesty, they present entirely new challenges how to maintain haya (modesty) and appear presentable through a screen without feeling unnecessarily exposed. Guiding your teenager to handle their posture, camera positioning, and attire with dignity teaches them that modesty is never about hiding a defect; it is profoundly about self respect that naturally carries across every communication medium, including the digital one.
Start With Understanding, Not Policing
You must begin the conversation by clearly explaining the fundamental reason why camera awareness is so crucial. You can sincerely say:
- ‘When we intentionally appear on camera, people observe far more than just our faces they quickly notice how we sit, what we wear, and even the background behind us. So, modesty actively helps us keep the focus strictly on our important words and ideas, not on our personal image.’
This thoughtful approach successfully invites genuine cooperation instead of resistance. The entire tone must be one of mutual respect, guiding them rather than lecturing.
Teach Camera Awareness
You must practically demonstrate precisely how certain angles can drastically alter perception. Show your teen the clear difference between placing the camera at eye level, sitting upright, and intentionally avoiding overly close or low angles. You can simply say:
- ‘Let us carefully set your camera at a height that feels both natural and entirely respectful never too low or too close. That intentional positioning ensures that the attention remains consistently on your ideas, not on the surrounding frame.’
You should strongly encourage them to maintain simple backdrops and keep their space tidy. Clutter or displaying highly personal items in the background can unintentionally compromise their privacy or unnecessarily draw attention.
Discuss Clothing With Sensitivity
Rather than issuing rigid, strict instructions, you must help your teenager internalize why specific clothing choices matter even when they are securely at home and on camera. You might sincerely say:
- ‘When you are actively on a video call, you are reliably representing your entire self and your core values. Even though you are safely at home, you should choose to dress as respectfully as if you were among others. Loose, tidy clothes successfully combine comfort and dignity.’
Suggest practical, comfortable choices:
- Light, highly breathable tops that are never tight or visually transparent.
- Neutral, calming colours that minimize visual distraction.
- A simple scarf or soft cardigan to add both coverage and comfort, if needed.
For young women who wear hijab, encourage them to select breathable, non slip fabrics that are perfectly suited for long calls. Explain that wearing it neatly adds to their confidence and focused concentration.
Link Modesty to Professionalism
You must consistently remind your teen that modest presentation is not solely a religious requirement it is a practical, valuable life skill. In job interviews or within formal online classrooms, a modest presentation reflects maturity. You can clearly explain:
- ‘People reliably take you much more seriously when your look is clean, composed, and appropriately modest. It clearly shows reliable self discipline and personal self respect.’
This critical connection helps them to value modesty as an active empowerment, never as a limitation.
Address Group Calls and Social Chats
You must discuss precisely how proper body language and tone also actively express modesty.
- Avoid exaggerated gestures, leaning too closely to the camera, or casual slouching postures.
- Consistently maintain a purposeful use of the camera turn it off if you are relaxing or choosing to dress casually.
- Never record or screenshot other people without their explicit, clear permission.
Remind them:
- ‘Even when you are actively online, modesty means diligently protecting both your own dignity and the necessary privacy of other people.’
Practise Together Beforehand
You should conduct a brief “modesty check” together before any important video calls: collaboratively adjust the camera height, check the lighting, and ensure the outfit is appropriate. Ask them honestly:
- ‘Do you sincerely feel confident and entirely comfortable with this specific setup?’
This shared, calm process diligently builds self guided discipline, never fear of making a mistake.
Encourage Reflection After Calls
After the group call concludes, ask them gently:
- ‘How did you honestly feel about how things went? Was there anything at all that made you personally uncomfortable or unsure?’
This ongoing dialogue helps your teen to correctly notice subtle boundaries they may have overlooked initially, effectively strengthening their self awareness through every single experience.
You should conclude this entire section by providing a strong final reminder to your family: modesty in digital spaces is primarily about presence, not chasing impossible perfection appearing online in ways that faithfully honour both their self and their sincere faith.
Spiritual Insight
Modesty is an inherent inner light that consciously shapes precisely how we choose to appear before others whether in person or virtually through a screen. The noble Quran and the Sunnah constantly call all believers to respectfully maintain grace, humility, and consideration in all their personal interactions, including those that are completely virtual.
Composure and Conduct Before Others
The Quran teaches that a believer’s inner humility should be visibly reflected in their external bearing and conduct.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 37:
‘And do not walk upon the earth arrogantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth apart, nor reach the mountains in height…’
This powerful verse clearly speaks to the necessity of humility in one’s physical bearing and conduct yet its spiritual essence extends profoundly to every form of self appearance. Whether sitting, standing, or actively appearing on video, the sincere believer carries humility in their expression and proper posture.
True Beauty in Modesty
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4184, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Modesty is part of faith, and faith is in Paradise.’
This beautiful Hadith clearly connects the virtue of modesty with ultimate spiritual reward. When a teenager successfully learns to consistently carry modesty into their digital spaces, they are not merely following temporary etiquette they are actively living their faith through necessary awareness, self restraint, and sincere self respect.
Teaching digital modesty is never about actively restricting your teenager’s freedom it is fundamentally about refining their digital presence. Through consistent, gentle practice and your compassionate example, you successfully help them confidently discover that even when they are directly in front of a camera, their quiet dignity and inner composure speak far louder than any filter or trending fashion ever could a direct reflection of their inner beauty that is securely rooted in their faith and faithfully guided by Allah Almighty.
