How can I reassure my child that these changes do not make them “weird” or “impure,” especially if they feel anxious about it?

Parenting Perspective

Puberty has the potential to make even the most outwardly confident child feel genuinely unsettled and confused. As their body undergoes new, often unpredictable changes, they may internally wonder: “Am I normal?” or, “Does Allah still love me if I have these changes?” Anxiety, confusion, and even a profound sense of misplaced guilt are common, especially if they have previously absorbed the damaging idea that natural, necessary processes are inherently “dirty” or “embarrassing.”

Your core responsibility as a devoted parent is to effectively replace that internal fear with clear reassurance: to help your child fully understand that growing up is absolutely not a spiritual loss of innocence, but rather a significant step into greater self awareness and dignity. The more compassionately and calmly you explain these truths, the sooner your child will internalise that Allah Almighty designed every stage of life with perfection and that none of their natural development diminishes their spiritual worth.

Start With Normalisation

You must reassure your child that every single person experiences these developmental changes it is a natural, shared part of how Allah created all humankind. You might sincerely say: “Every adult you respect every teacher, every family member, every friend went through this same exact process. Allah deliberately designed it this way so that we can successfully grow wiser and stronger.”

  • Breaking Isolation: Normalising their immediate experience instantly breaks the isolating illusion of abnormality. It helps them confidently realise that what currently feels “weird” or strange is actually the most universal and fundamental part of being human.

Use Faith to Anchor Their Understanding

Children consistently require spiritual reassurance, not merely clinical, biological explanation. Gently remind them: “Allah consciously created your unique body with perfect wisdom and balance. Every single change you are currently seeing is exactly as He planned it and He never, ever makes mistakes in His design.”

  • Gratitude Over Fear: Encourage them to sincerely thank Allah for their growth, even during moments when the process feels awkward or confusing. Gratitude inherently turns fear into a necessary spiritual trust. You can model this by reciting a simple du’a together: “O Allah, please help me to grow in the best way in my health, my manners, and my faith.”

This crucial practice firmly connects their physical body’s journey to a much larger spiritual purpose, completely removing any sense of shame.

Clarify the Concept of Purity

It is common for children to confuse ritual, physical impurity (hadath or najasah) which simply requires ritual cleansing or ghusl with true moral impurity, which pertains to the heart and conscious sin. Explain gently: “Needing a full shower or ghusl does not mean you are morally sinful or physically dirty. It simply means your body needs necessary renewal and refreshing like making wudu or routinely washing your hands.”

Use practical, calm examples to clearly show that physical cleansing is merely a ritual of profound respect, not a punishment. When their faith is successfully taught this way, the child correctly associates necessary cleanliness with sincere self respect, never with shame.

Recognise and Validate Their Feelings

If they express feelings of sadness, discomfort, or general confusion, you must first listen attentively. You might respond: “It is completely okay to feel awkward or unsure about these changes. These changes can indeed feel very strange at first, but that does not make you weird it just means you are successfully growing.”

By validating their complex emotions before teaching the factual guidance, you actively help them feel seen and understood. Reassurance immediately opens the heart for guidance; dismissal permanently closes it.

Use Your Own Calm to Model Acceptance

Your child will always mirror your dominant energy and reaction. If you discuss puberty confidently, without hesitation or visible embarrassment, they will learn that these topics are entirely natural, not taboo

Small, consistent gestures like calm eye contact, a gentle tone, or a relaxed posture communicate far more effectively than words: “This whole process is completely normal. You are safe. You are still loved.”

Teach the Beauty of Renewal

You must logically link their new physical responsibilities (such as ghusl or regular menstrual hygiene) to the profound beauty of spiritual renewal. Say: “Every single time you purify yourself, you intentionally start fresh clean in your body and pure in your soul. Allah loves those who keep themselves pure.”

This process successfully reframes all bodily care as a sacred act of growth, effectively turning initial anxiety into positive empowerment

Remind Them That Growth Is a Blessing

Encourage consistent reflection on precisely how their body’s changes permit them to do more, learn more, and contribute more to the world. You might sincerely say: “The fact that your body is changing and maturing means that Allah is trusting you with more it is a tangible sign of maturity and capability, never something to hide.”

By actively helping them perceive growth as a sacred honour, you gradually dissolve their fear and restore their inherent pride in the gift of human development.

Spiritual Insight

Islamic teachings approach the reality of human growth with profound compassion and complete dignity. The noble Quran and the Sunnah of the holy Prophet Muhammad  consistently affirm that every single stage of life youth, childhood, adulthood carries its own unique purpose and beauty. True purity in Islam is never about denying natural biological functions but always about intentionally maintaining the necessary balance between the body and the soul.

Every Creation of Allah Is Noble

The Quran provides the ultimate spiritual anchor, confirming that the human physical design is intentional and perfect.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Tin (95), Verses 4 5:

‘Indeed, We created man in the best of forms; then We reduced him to the lowest of the low, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds…’

This powerful verse reminds your child that their body, in all its various stages, is fundamentally part of Allah’s perfect design created in “the best form.” Growth and change do not spiritually lessen that initial perfection; they are essential parts of the majestic Divine pattern that shapes them into spiritually responsible believers.

The Prophet ’s Teaching on Cleanliness and Faith

The Hadith directly links the process of taking care of one’s physical body to the spiritual core of their faith.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 223, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Cleanliness is half of faith.’

This Hadith explicitly links all bodily care directly to their spirituality. It reminds your child that tending to physical purity whether through ghuslwudu, or basic hygiene is never about shame, but is rooted in gratitude and deep love. It successfully transforms simple, necessary acts of cleanliness into acts of sincere worship, powerfully reinforcing that the body remains spiritually honourable at every single stage of development.

Turning Anxiety Into Assurance

When you consciously choose to treat these sensitive topics with compassionate faith and unwavering calm, your child learns the profound truth that Allah’s wisdom leaves no part of human life untouched by His mercy. Growth stops feeling like a loss or a threat it transforms into a significant spiritual gift.

Your consistent empathy will gently teach them that Islam fundamentally celebrates balance: true purity with deep understanding, sincere modesty with confidence, and spiritual discipline with unconditional love. Over time, their initial anxiety will gracefully fade, to be securely replaced by a quiet pride in who they are a believer created with profound dignity, unconditionally loved by Allah Almighty, and gently guided by parents who faithfully reflect His mercy.
